I want to buy a very used Hobie 16, there are several around my lake. I have looked closely at a couple. Seems they all have somewhat weak decks (they move up and down) foreward of the tramp posts. One even has cracks front to rear on the sides of the deck. I have heard this is a common problem, should I stay away from these boats or is there a quick/cheap/easy fix to strengthen the decks?

The asking price is only about $1,000 with trailer, they are 1979 vintage. Anyone got a better/newer H16 in Florida for about $1,000? I could go higher for a good boat but I don't need a racing boat, just a beater for the kids to learn on. (I would prefer a TheMightyHobie18 but I can't find any good boats cheap)

Thanks Jim. Has anyone tried this? Does it really work? How hard is it to keep from drilling through the inner fiberglass layer?

Jim, I think I've been to San Angelo, TX. Is that where Canyon Lake is? I went windsurfing there back in about 1984...

There is no way I would waste my money on a soft hulled Hobie. I wouldn't take one for free.Take you time and look around. Hobie 16's are everywhere. I paid $500. for one here in Delaware in perfect condition. All I needed to do was modernize the hardware to suit my needs. The boat was sailable the way I bought it.

I think that if the trailer is in really good condition, the whole package should be priced at more like $250.00. The repair is possible, but you'll have countless hours and quite a bit of money spent on Epoxy. Plus, the resale wouldn't be that great after the repair.
Check some of the other parts out. The sails, rudders, blocks, etc., have value, even if the hulls are junk. If you can buy it right, maybe you can find good hulls somewhere.
Good luck,
Jack

Hmmm... Being the owner of a seasoned Hobie that eventually turns soft and fixing the thing is one thing - but buying one and fixing the thing is a bad idea. Lots of work, money, time... The result will be a more or less fixed boat which will be heavy and will show most likely signs of more delamination a few years down the road.
Take one of those if they give em' away for free or if you need a parts boat. Also stay away from the baots that come with out a title especially if your state requires one. Read about the differences and changes made over the last 30+ years to hobie 16's in order to determine what year of hobie you want.

The price of boats with soft hulls should be the equivalent of the major GOOD used parts on the boat: mast, sail, tramp, rudders-and-castings. For a late 70s boat that has been modestly used in fresh water, chances are the sails moderately blown out and chaffed, with some stitching broken and pulled out; rudder castings are half worn and a bit fussy; tramp is about shot; wires are questionable; if the mast has a comp tip- the tip may have age problems.
Now, if the mast is all aluminum and hasn't been dented or bent, it is probably in good shape. A good mast is worth $300.

So, the above typical freshwater boat without a trailer is worth at best $300. For recreational use, worn sails not needing repairs is ok. Add up the cost of the needed replacement parts and epoxy, and YOUR labor. I'd guess you would average out to about a $1000 boat, AFTER fixing it up.

For $1000, you should be able to find a boat without problems.
