Hi all,
I'm trying to make a righting line to replace the worn out sagging one I have on my Hobie 16. It is the kind that loops around everything from one rudder to the other. I have 36 feet of hollow half inch for the line and about 28 feet of 5/16 shock cord. So the questions are these:
What is the length of the shock cord to put in the middle and how much 1/2 inch do I thread on to it with my trusty fid, so it pulls out to the right length? I'll leave about 3 ft. on each end. I would use my old one for this, but the shock cord has lost it's stretchy. I know, I know, I should have just bought a kit...

Maybe after this, I'll re-think my sig.

Well, you'd want enough hollow braid to tie a bowline around the dolphin striker and then go around both front pylons to the rear pylons. With regards to how much shock cord, I'm pretty sure you'd want slightly more than that inside, but unless someone else responds it might be easier just to trial-and-error it... have a buddy hold the end of the shock cord at the rear pylon and then see how far forward you can bring the righting line...

Warm regards, Jim

Thanks, Claus.
The one I'm making is the "Stretch Righting System" on page 37 of the Murrays catalog. There are no pulleys. It just retracts on itself and loops from one rudder pin, around the posts, then behind the dolphin striker, back around the posts on the other side and ties to a small loop of line around the other rudder pin. Same on both sides. No drilling. Pretty simple, I guess, if you bought the kit. I already had half the stuff so I thought I could make one.

Is it true that out of 124 viewers of this request, nobody knows the righting line measurements? Maybe you all use a different system.
