We are expecting a healthy turnout for the Hangover Distance Race at Dunedin Causeway again this year.
From what I've been told, the courses will be modified in order to give the spectators more to see than just the start and finish. This approach, of making the races more "spectator friendly", should give the crowd a different perspective on what goes on between the start and finish.
The new course should be great! If the attached picture works, it starts on the south (left) of mid-causeway, heads out into the gulf, north (right) past Honeymoon Island and 3 Rooker Bar, then back south to the NORTH side of the causeway. Here spectators can see the midpoint turn by just walking across the street from the start. There may be a triangle course here for a lengthened spectator opportunity. Then you return around Honeymoon to the finish. I sailed it on Sunday and found lots of deep water and a large new bay we rarely sail. The water is still 75 and the air was 80 (although it has cooled since then).
The race is on New Years Day and will start at 12:00 noon. We will be at the Dunedin Causeway all morning getting ready. You shouldn't have any trouble getting a spot to launch. Skipper's meeting is at 11:00. I think the fee is $10.00 for double handed and $5.00 for unis. This usually pays for your food after you finish. If you need additional information, just let me know. The race committee plans to have detailed charts available for those of you that haven't raced with us before.
No matter what happens you should have a great time. Looks like good weather so far too.

Here is the announcement from the Tampa Bay Catamaran Sailors commadore.
This is the same group that just did the much acclaimed 2001 Hobie Continental Championships.

It's going to be different. It's going to be fun. It's going to be great!
TBCSI Hangover Regatta Fees: $10 per 1-person boat
January 1, 2002 $15 per 2-person
Dunedin Causeway, Florida
Open to all beach multihulls
9-11am Registration
11am Skippers' meeting
12pm Class Flag
after Food and Awards
The different plan is to make it a combination distance and buoy race.
The start as usual will be in front of Sail Honeymoon, then it will be up around Honeymoon Island and Three Rooker Bar depending on the class of boat then down into St. Joseph Sound on the north side of the Causeway. A gate will be passed through on the north side of the causeway. From there the course will go straight windward to the windward mark. After a number of turns between the Gate and the windward mark it will be back to the start/finish line in front of Glen's for the Trophies and Food.
The nice change is that this is a race close to land and very visible to the Causeway crowd. We are notifying spectators of the fantastic sight this will make for the New Year. Beautiful boats racing along the Causeway close enough to touch.
We will have a mark boat/Jet-Ski and are trying to set up for another chase boat.
Come one, come all! Try to race but if not it will be a great spectator event.
TBCSI Commodore,
Terry

Is there a fishermen's forum where we can ask that they keep a reasonable distance from our course. It can get a little costly for them if they get too close, huh Prof?

See you on the 1st., and probably several times before.
Went over the course today with my Uni and Fred on his 5.2 Nacra. Long way, but all open water. Good wind today out of the east at 12-15 knots. Air temp. was perfect and water was not cold. Lets hope it holds for the race on the 1st.

I know that in the past this race has been called because of temp. I was wondering what temp would have to be to call the race. I don't mind racing in low temps, and I hope that many others don't mind either. I'm sure we can hear many stories about sailors chipping a runway in the ice just to sail back and forth. Besides, by noon we should have nice 60's.
Just wondering and really wanting to race on the first day of the year.
