Hello,
I've been cruising my Dart 20, but it's a little twitchy. what I really want is a Hobie 21sc - I can kep it on the beach for free and my wife will let me have one. we didn't get the SC in the UK - or at least if we did no ones telling.
So the question - I can get a Hobie 21 - we got those, is it just a case of locting the relevent spares - that box thing and bolting it on? Or is there more to it than that?

Ta Dan

Pretty sure the only similarities between the Hobie 21 and the Hobie 21SC are the wings and the simiilar hull shape. The Hobie 21 has an expandable 10ft beam, the 21SC has an 8 or 8.5ft beam. Also, the sail plans are completly different. The 21 was designed to be a racing boat, the 21SC is a cruiser. The two just happen to share the same hulls.

Didn't the SC have an 18' sail plan?

Got a Dart 20 - I want something a bit more sedate to take people out on , cruise about , not capsize , anchor and fish off. Not scare myself and do a bit of camping.

If you could find a Reynolds 21 and import that you might be even happier

How about a smaller rig for your Dart?

As noted above. The 21 SC was tame because it had a smaller rig. It had virtually Hobie 18 sail area.

If you import a 21SC from the Houston area, I have a 21SC box I will throw in for free. Don't ask how I ended up with it in my backyard.

There were some similiar British boats built in the 70's -80's. I remember seeing pictures and thinking, how strange.

There was a British boat called a Strider(?) 20-21 ft like a Reynolds 21.

You could convert a H21 into a kinda of cruiser by building a custom (small) sail set and adding storage. A 10 wide H21 with a 240 sq ft rig would be real stable. Keep in mind those things are heavy 500-550 lbs.

The Strider is a Richard Woods design. See www.sailingcatamarans.com for a list of wonderful plans. It fits into the Micro Multihull Class for near-shore racing. The Janus would be easier to build, and the Wizzer would be sportier, but all of these are likely too big and heavy to wheel around on the beach by one man. You could possibly convince Richard to design you a ~20' "camp-cat"

Hummm , I've looked at the Strider , but they are a wee bit pricey, although very nice , and the whizzer is a great boat. I've been looking a a twist , a 21 ' french open deck cat, although it looks like a bit of a plodder.

Look for a Stiletto 23, perhaps. Very fast, very light, could be rolled on the beach with custom wheels by one big guy or two smaller guys. Again, might be an import-only option.
