Cat Trax and sundamage? Should I protect them? #49365

Just made the purchase of cat trax brand cat wheels.

These things are not cheap but do appear built well.

Curious if any measure should be taken to protect the big black tires from UV? Should they be covered from the sun during the week while sitting on the trailer?

Thanks for the advise.

Sun damage to cat tracks would take time. The tracks here are stored under the boat, the trampoline takes the beating,so the boat is covered in some manner. An off shoot question though! Was the intention of cat trax to place and gather the boat in the surf(shoreline),or when it was clear of the tide mark. Also I heard the less a tire was used the more prone to wear and rot could one expect to occur. So take your cat for a walk once in a while and you'll not have to worry as much.P.S. 5yrs or more is not unheard of from many owners of beach wheels.

I've often thought about that too. Mine reside on my trailer on special made brackets but are mostly exposed to the sun all day long. I've had these cattrax for 4 years and although there is some tiny crazing of the rubber surface, they're still working fine. I've often thought about making some sort of sunbrella cover for them but when looking at the time and money spent on covering and uncovering them after every outing vs. buying two rubber tires every 7 years probably is a wash.

I keep my Cat Trax hanging in the garage when not on the trailer going to a regatta. Purchased them in 88 and they still look new. As with any rubber or plastic the UV rays eventually degrade the material. There is a reason "Ashes to ashes, Dust to dust"

I've had my Cat Trax for about 10 years. The rubber still looks fine on mine and I never cover them. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. Find a nice cover for your tramp.

Ours are in the sun all the time; still don't leak. We've never had to buy new tires, so I don't even know how much they cost....
