Hi All and happy holidays,

I have a P16 with unfortunately a broken mast that happened the end of last summer during a strong wind storm. I've been looking for a replacement mast but its been pretty tough to find one local. As I was walking past my neighbors house, I spotted a Nacra 5.0 in his backyard, the hulls and tramp are in fair shape (although the stitching on the tramp needs replacing) and I believe the sails are in good shape. I would guess the year of the boat to be in the late 80's. What I'm wondering is the performance difference between the P16 and Nacra 5.0 in terms of speed and persons capacity. Also, any idea on what I should offer them for the boat?

Thanks

Smilsom: Here is a spreadsheet I developed recently on some of the more popular cats. It gives some of the the basic specs on the boats and also the DPN (portsmouth numbers). The data is only as accurate as what I could dig up on the internet. Both boats are listed and have well established DPN numbers. As you can see the performance is very similar. Happy Holidays. DCS

I would recommend the N5.0 highly, it is a fun boat, faster than P16 upwind, but about the same speed overall.

As for what $$ to offer him for his boat, consider some other alternatives.

- Nacra 5.0 has almost no parts in common with P16. Now you have two half boats, both of which need parts. Why not find a P16 with a good mast and bad hulls.

- why not source a used P16 mast. have you tried sailingproshop.com?

- Repair the broken mast - there have been several posts on how to do that, and if you can't find them, post again, you'll get lots of ideas/help.

Good luck,

Not sure where you are but they are quite a few "derelict" P 16's at our local marina- Many of which are brand new but old and weathered. I can inquire of a mast if you want- Also a friend of mine in the southern part of AR has a P 16 w/ "soft" hulls- Maybe he would want your hulls or you his mast/boat??

E-mail me if interested-
