Posts: 1,884 Detroit, MI | The Hobie 16s, with 9 teams, continue to dominate this and other summer ocean regattas, remarkable considering that Hobie does not make this boat in the US any longer. Uh, Roy - the H-16 is Hobie Cat USA's best selling fiberglass boat - made in Oceanside, CA. They make 300 - 400 of them a year. Perhaps you're thinking of the H-18? | | | Re: Jetty Park Ocean Regatta up on florida multihull s

Posts: 805 Gainesville, FL 32607 USA | Roy is brain damaged from (occasionally) sailing his SuperCat for lo these many years. Not his fault- having never paid that much attention.

Posts: 16 | The comment on Florida Multihull Sailor about Hobie 16s being produced overseas is incorrect. I received the following note from Greg Thomas at Hobie Cat USA:
Hobie Cat makes all of the 16’s in the US and always have. We do not import the H16 into the US, we only import the Hobie Tiger, FX1, Dragoon and Fox. I’ve worked at Hobie for 6 years now and before that worked at Hobie dealers and have never heard the rumor of any US production moving to Brazil?
[Greg's comment about Brazil is an answer to my question about the story I read noting that 16s would be make in Brazil and imported to the US, a story apparently without substance.]
I added a correction note to the JPOR story on Florida Multihull Sailor. And in the future, 'trust no one!' I'll write or call Hobie Cat before I make any such statements . . . Sorry for the bad information
And a note for Dave: Building a house for the past 3 years has taken wind out of my sails. But I did sail at least one day each week from the Miami Key Largo race through the Memorial Day weekend, and two of those weekends was on a Hobie. At least an hour every weekend, and often many hours. So I'm getting over my born again sailing virginity. I'll be at the Daytona Summer Sizzler this weekend, photographing, rather than sailing, unfortunately. You be there? The weather report is the usual for the summer, but since last weekend, the rains have come late in the day. If the pattern holds, it'll be two days of good racing. | | |
