Bought one. Really helps stepping mast. Raked mast yesterday to see just exactly what it accomplishes for me - new rec Hobie sailor. Breaking down for trip home couldn't get hinge in between mast and crossbeam til I un-raked the rig. Is there a better answer other than a crane? I can't imagine there is a better answer due to the basic geometry. But with my stubby fingers and those damn split rings I thought I should ask. I am trying the big boy forum for a better chance of answer.

The step link does not have a wide range of attachment possibility. Usually all you have to do is push the mast forward to get the link in.

The link has to stay in a fixed geometry to get the ball into the cup.
