Hi JustJohn - It's not hard to do, but is easiest if you can see a sling (bridle) rather than have it explained in words. I have hoisted my previous P19 and current I20 several times. I don't have time to write a lot now (sailing to catalina island tomorrow), but I'll try to get back to you next week with more info.
The basics are:
1. get 2 ropes long enough and strong enough (like maybe 1/2 in.).
2. Holding together, tie a loop in the middle where you will attach the hoist hook. A figure 8 knot is best as it's much easier to adjust.
3. Tie each end of the 2 lines around the main and rear beams, at the corners of the tramp.
4. You must spend some time adjusting all the lengths until you get the boat hanging just slightly bow-down from the hoist (keeps the mast away from the hoist).
5. Be careful that the boat doesn't capsize bow-down (easy to do!).
6. It's best if you use caribiners to attach to the 4 points on the boat, as these are fast and you know you always have the same lengths on the lines.
7. You need a tag line from bow to stern with 20 ft. to spare (mine is 60' long), so that you can control the boat's direction while it is in the air.
8. Try to watch someone else doing it, as this will help to clarify the picture.
Sail fast and have fun,
Alan Thompson
