There is no doubt...Hobie Fleet 204 does an amazing job with their promotion of "yout" sailing! You have all done a tremendous job of not only introducing kids to sailing, but also maintaining their enthusiasm for the sport!

Congratulations!!

Hi Tom

Your comment brought to mind a recent US Sailing newsletter on youth sailing. They pointed out that kids on boats are alot like adults on boats in that each finds something about the sport that intrigues them. Racing was one aspect. 204 has great committed parents who support their kids in cat racing and they should be acknowledged. (I am guessing the Ingham is Mike Ingham's kid?)

They pointed something out that I had never considered... Just like adults... some kids liked tinkering with boat gadgets while others liked cruising with their friends.

Perhaps others have anecdotes of kid type activities that are keeping kids attached the bigger picture of cat sailing.

Take Care
Mark

Tom:

First of all, hope that your back gets better. We miss seeing you at the Regattas.

Now, about the youth sailors: Your Fleet should be commended for all the work and dedication they have shown toward the youth programs. No one is surprised at all that you have some champions in your Fleet and we're all hoping that they continue to get better. As it is, your youth will probably beat most of our H-16 sailors on a regular basis, except for two.

Just a little personal note from me: I got to the Rochester Regatta early on Friday and finished setting up my boat, so I was lucky enough to get a great camp site overlooking the beach. After everything was set up we sat on our beach chairs with a beer and watched your younger Fleet members take turns helping each other set up and tune their boats. They had a wonderful group of kids that just enjoyed being there and were having a great time. That kind of fun comes with being comfortable, and your Fleet has made them feel right at home. Kudos to all of you.

Wyatt, 119

Mike and Sam are the only youth team representing the USA at this years Hobie 16 Worlds in South Africa. They have also qualified to go to France and race in an International youth event. They need your help to get there. Please visit Fleet204.com to see how you can help.

Just to build on what Pat B. wrote:

This year, there is only 1 pre-qualified team representing the US in the H16 Youth worlds. That team is Mike Siau (18) and Sam Ingham (16). Mike is a local Fleet 204 sailor from the Syracuse area, Sam is from neighboring Rochester.

Though time is running short (before they leave), we in fleet 204 are putting together a drive to help raise funds to ease the financial load of travel and lodging to South Africa, for the Youth World Championships.

As you may have read, Mike and Sam recently won the US Sailing Youth Multihull Championships ( http://www.ussailing.com/multihull/stevens/index.htm ), and Mike is a past winner of the Hobie 16 North American Youth Championships. This past year Mike placed second in the Hobie 16 North American Youth Championships.

We in Fleet 204 are very proud of Mike and Sam and this is one effort to spread the word that we/they could use some help in representing the United States of America in the Worlds!

Please see ( http://www.fleet204.com/fundraiser.shtml ) for information on how you can help.

Thank You
