Ahh..the month of wind is finally here. After all those hot windless summer days the breeze is blowin' here in Hickory. I feel proud that I'm the only Hobie on the Lake and can't get enough of flying a hull solo while hangin' out on the trap. It truly is one of the best feelings in the world. The power and control of the Hobie is unmatched by anything I've ever done. It has almost become an obsession and I love introducing all my "what is a Hobie Cat?" friends by taking them out and scaring the crap out of them for a few hours. Green Day must be right and I am dreaming so Wake Me Up When September Ends. Have a Hobie Day and hope all you NC residents are skipping work to go sail, it's worth it!

Will,

I seem to remember a couple of months ago you were just getting the rigging straightened out. Now you sound as if you have come a long way. These boats should come with a warning label "Sailing a Hobie can be addictive". Labor day weekend the wind starts almost every year here in NC. I was out on Jordan on Labor Day with my grandson, flying back and forth with him on the wire most of the time. I think we had 20 mph plus all day. How is Hickory Lake for sailing? I have never been there though I used to sail on Lake Norman.

I agree, September is probably my favorite month to sail. There's wind, warm water, and cooler air. The only disadvantage are the hurricanes. There won't be much sailing for me this week.

I thought Saturday might be a great day on Jordan or Kerr Lake. I don't think the coast will be too good though.

Where do you usually sail?

Usually in the Roanoke Sound around Nags Head. Since I'm in Raleigh for school I'll be at Lake Wheeler or Jordan Lake.

i didn't think Wheeler was big enough for sailing. My daughter and her family live near there. It takes me 1 1/2 hours to get to Jordan and over 2 hours to get to Kerr. If you go to Jordan look for sail # 94512. I think that is right. I bought a sail from someone in Raleigh a couple of years ago and can't forget my old number or remember the new one.

Haha, Wheeler is not really big enough for sailing, but it's still home to the NCSU sailing club, that's why I'm out there most of the time. I've been to Kerr once a couple years ago and I would really like to get back sometime this year.

I have a Marshall Sanderling catboat that I keep in a marina on Kerr. It is a great sailing lake but I don't see many Hobies there. In fact I don't see a lot of boats on the lake. I sailed the catboat there last Sunday with a reef in all day, wishing I had brought the Hobie.

My daughter graduated from NCSU and my grandaughter is a freshman there.

Yes, I finished my restoration and have been waiting for solid wind. The long and narrow channel that is Lake Hickory is not great, but convenient as I'm 1/2 mile away. It's a lot like some of the channels of Lake Norman, but with less consistent wind - I guess that's why I'm the only one out there in any type of sailing vessel. Have definitely had some fun on Lake Norman, this past Sat. in fact. I'd love to bring it down to Jordan and sail with ya Howard. I'm sure I could learn a lot.

Will,

I'd like to go to Norman but can't do it until possibly next weekend. Tomorrow my son wants to go with me on the catboat up on Kerr/Buggs Island. I'll be in touch. I don't think you would learn that much from me. It sounds as if you have learned a great deal already. A friend told me you can learn all you need to know about sailing in 20 minutes and the rest of your life you spend trying to go faster.
