With a panel of 4 or 5 women including Olympic hero's.... The first question by Janet Baxter... ARe women discriminated against in sailing?
Most thought that ONCE they had established their confidence... they were accepted as part of the team or the authority (intl judging)
A long discussion on women in sailing followed,
US Sailing awarded Sue Mikulski an honor for her role in creating a program for Junior Girls with a record of accomplishment in sailing and put them on boats with the Women’s international Rolex Skippers and a variety of boats to make these role models real to the young women.
Serious events are recognized by the world… Chick races are not… Be serious… they will take you seriously.
College Sailing is still problematic… Guys still walk around and recruit the smallest girls they can find… They may be great crew… but they can’t drive the boat … and they don’t stay with the sport…. Somethings wrong here.
What works
Clevland has a women's RACING program... they enrolled boat owners to serve as coaches. The women in the program race the boat... and the owner coaches... Everyone takes a turn at the racing stations... the goal is to grow RACERS who happen to be women. I think somehthing like a 1000 women are involved.
I ran out of gas at the end.!
