One of the guys at the club just destroyed the jib on his KL15.5 Tonic beyond repair. Unfortunately he's a really nice guy who can only afford to run his cat on a shoestring. (I didn't mean that it's unfortunate he's a nice guy )Therefore a new jib is out of the question.

Does anyone either have a used jib for a KL15 or one that would fit? (it would also need to be at an 'attractive' price )

(I guess this question is primarily for the euro cat sailors out there)

If you dont get any leads here, check what sailrite in the US has to offer. They are forthcoming with designing and producing new kits for home assembly. http://www.sailrite.com

Or, if he is not sailing one-design. Help him design his own jib, hand cut the panels (go for a cross-cut layout) and finish it off on a regular sewing machine. It doesn't get more economical than that, especially not as this is the right season to haggle with sailmakers about cloth, zippers etc.

Thanks Rolf, that is an option. I've already built myself several sails, including (just a few weeks ago) a new spinnaker. So building a sail would not really be a problem for me, but then I don't know that I want to spend my time building a sail for someone else!!

I guess our preferred route is still to find a suitable used sail. If not then Peter's going to have to learn to sew!

John, I would love to hear more about your sailmaking experiences, and your spi.

Do you do the design, and buy finished panels from a sailmaker, or do you cut and mark as well? What software do you use to design your sails?

Here are some pictures of the Maxx Tornado sails we did this summer:

The wrinkles visible was corrected with proper batten tension and downhaul. The design work was done in Sailcut CAD ( http://www.sailcut.com ), an open source saildesign software. Credits to Marcus Towell for helping out with the mainsail.
We have a spi in work now, at the design stage ready for 1:10 testing. For the 2007 season we want to do a completely new set and an experimental spi (which involves Per F.).

If nothing used comes up (usually not much power and height left in used jibs, but perhaps your friend doesn't mind to much?), Doing a design i Sailcut CAD, and giving your friend manual cut-lists and some explaination of the process should be enough. Perhaps some inspiration and support in the finishing phase..
