Anyone know the diff between mainsail area of a H14 and a H16? I'm wondering if a 14 handles just like a 16 without the jib...

my recollection the 14 has 118 sf main, 27sf jib for a total of 145 sf. the 16 has 218 sf total, about 178 sf in the main and 40 in the jib. a 14 turbo handles a lot like a 16. the tacking drill is the same. a 14 classic handles a lot like a 16 without a jib. same tacking drill. is this helpful?

dannyb,
Yup, that was helpful. Thanks. A friend is thinking of buying an old 14, and I wondered if "mainsail only" races would be fair...

Can you put the rigging from a H16 on a H14? That could make it rediculous.

I'm boatless.

I would think it would work... I mean, the mast bases are the same, and it seems like all you'd have to do is shorten the shrouds to make it fit. Not a bad idea.
We'd call it the H14 Twin-Turbo.

The 14's shrouds attach to the tramp sidebar; the 16's attach to an anchor bar underneath the hull's deck lip.

If you put a 16's rig on the 14, you'd have to change the attachment because of the load. The sidebar is barely strong enough for the regular 14 rig. I'm not sure if the 14's deck lip is strong enough.

You'd better have a good dolphin striker set up on the front crossbar, too.

The bridle attachments are different, too.

Using the main and jib from the 16 on the 14 would probably be pretty fun in light air though. Even if it took a little bit of effort to make it work. And I kinda like the "Twin Turbo" name.
