Does anyone have experience with a conversion? I was thinking about the Murray's conversion. And then add a spinaker.

Email Jonathan Grant catapulttramps@netscape.net - he is modifying his P19 with a jib furler. Basically, you need to get a sailboat rigging shop to make you a custom pigtail (shorter) to account for the length of the upper and lower furler units. Also, you will have to remove any adjustable jib-luff tension hardware. I would suggest copying the I20-style jib halyard/downhaul system, as it works well with a furler and is easy to use.

For furling h/w, you could either use the older Harken-style furler, or a newer style where the drum sits below the forestay/bridle intersection. Check with Harken and/or call Performance Catamarans.

Sail fast and have fun,

Alan Thompson

Where are you located, John? I'm in South Texas, and I'm doing the same exact thing to my P-19. Long-time P-19 owner, All Sails distance racer, and sailboat rigger (yeah, for a living) Scott Tuma in Galveston is doing the work. He made a real good price on the standing rigging and roller-furling conversion; he beat Murray's by a substantial margin. We are going to set it up May 3, and I'll take some pix and send to you off-list if you like. Also, email me if you want, and I'll send you Scott's contact info.

sail fast!!

I live in Austin. I like the Murray's solution for simplicity. It does not include Harken's under bridle furler. This is similar to the TheMightyHobie18 furler. My TheMightyHobie18 never had a problem furling.

The P19 needs new standing rigging, so I thought this is a good time to upgrade. Please send the info on Scott and pictures. I'm out of town on May 3 or I would watch the setup. How did you set up the spinaker and where did you get the parts?

Do you sail a uni5.5, also?

John

Scott is riggingsolutions@ev1.net, or call 281-705-3712. It saves on the deal if you do standing rigging AND roller furling at the same time...something about forestay length being a little shorter to compensate for furling drums, and not having to buy a second pigtail.

Good luck!

Hey John, Jonathan Grant here. I recently purchase a P19 that already had the roller furling setup on it. The drum, from what I understand, was a Hobie 18 drum. You released the line and it furled on is own. I had to replace it because when you released it would not furl all of the way. I bought a new drum and swivel from Alan Thompson. You pretty much pull the line the furl and release and sheet in the jib to unfurl it. Seems pretty slick. The only problem was the upper pigtail was swagged into the swivel, so I can not replace it. Because the drums were different I had to actually had to use two chain plates to get some mast rake. I am also going to replace my rigging real soon here. Seems like the guy Andrew knows, might just work. I had to run a 6" line to keep the jib down to keep that slot open. I know what you mean, by you want something you can pretty much just "bolt right on." About the spinnaker, I am lost there unfortunately. Seeing Andrew's pictures on the open forum, makes me want to add on. Patience is a virue, they say. Let me know if I can be off any more assitance. Jonathan Grant

Andrew and Jonathan,

Thanks for all your help. I'll call Scott and talk to him.

Andrew, What happened to Jamie Gaines' Worrell team?

John

Jamie never intended to race the Worrell this year. He's working as the captain of an 82' Bristol leadmine currently in Houston. His co-skipper from last year, John Tomko from San Antonio, has joined forces with former 3rd sailor John Oliveira to try their luck this year as Team San Antonio (www.teamsa.com). They have a new boat (in addition to Tomko's own boat, which will be the designated spare again this year) and what looks like a really strong team. I was supposed to be pusher/boat fixer, and had originally accepted the position, but work and school will prevent me from going.

John:

I sail a P19 with a roller furled jib without battens for recreation and the standard setup for racing. Last year there was a thread on the old forum that mentioned that the Harken Hi-load drum (Murrays #28-0165) was too small for 20' boats and could come apart under load. The old catalog also said not recommended for such boats. I do use it and like the way it works. I ordered the upper forestay with swivel from Murrays at the same time. Still, my mast is raked farther back with the old forestay, and that jib has battens, so it is faster in race mode. Just something to be cautious about. Good luck!
