The "hondle" conversion sails, well, like the OP said, better than with no sails. Hobie 16 main is bigger, and I don't remember if the jib fits. Do it - go sailing!

I have an old set of p16 sails (old but usable for the most part). The boat was eliminated by a hurricane - poor little guy, served me well. I would be happy to give them to you (just sitting in my garage anyway). However, seems like you may be a bit far away.

Saipain, far away? Yes, but the island is still part of the U.S "Commonwealth" trough your holdings in Micronesia. Perhaps there are some special deals for sending stuff there?
with all you guys sarcastic remarks I thought I would enlighten you a little further as to "why" im asking such a question. first off I will say that a hobie 16 has about 30 more square feet of sail area than a prindle 16, (imagine 3 feet wide and 10 feet long) but a prindle 16 weighs in just 20 pounds lighter than a hobie 16, now imagine that I weigh 180, my crew weighs 225, so together we are at 405. the ideal weight for a prindle or hobie for that matter is 285. so I have three choices either get my crew to lose weight (alot of weight) or change my crew, or increase my sail size. sense my crew is not overweight but just a BIG person we have decided to increase sail size, NOW before you say anything. YES we could easily "borrow" a set of hobie sails from someone in our yacht club, however being the Only PRINDLE in our club we are trying not to give them any ideas as to what we are doing.( we just wanna blow them away during the next regatta) but YOU being the hobie people that you are are probably holding out giving this poor PRINDLE owner a chance to "rock the boat" but if there's any Prindle owners out there that wanna support a bad butt prindle..please give me the scoop.. as for the rest of you THANKS FOR READING my post. good winds to all!! As best I recall, the portsmouth numbers for H16 and P16 are virutally identical.
IMO, the Prindle is a little better upwind, whereas the Hobie is a little faster off the wind. Other sailors have commented that the biggest difference is the loose footed v club footed mainsails.
Further, I seem to recall that crew weight over 300 lbs would make either boat non-competitive.
You would would probably be better off to add a sail, like a screecher. That would be a bad-butt Prindle!
I think that 30 Sq Ft will not make up for 120 lbs more on those boats as they are not the floatiest.
You cannot not really get a portsmouth number as there is not one for that configuration. I am sure that your "friends" will let you play though.
If I were thinking about coming out boat for boat on a Prindle 16 and wanted to blow them away, I would find a big Performance Catamarans boat that uses the same mast step and put the whole rig on it. Image a Nacra 6.0 rig on a 16? Wow!
Instead of adding a screacher, why don't you find your crew another P16 and both of you sail solo? You'll find the P16 easy to handle, easy to right if capsized and MUCH, MUCH faster than with crew (especially 225!). You should be able to match or beat all but the best of Hobie 16 crews as well. More fun solo, too (crew = "Get off the jib blocks, you idiot!")
just because you are trying to put together a cheater boat without your buddies knowing so you can blow them off at some regatta, is that any reason to get so defensive???
Catmech, Is the regatta racing done on Portsmouth handicapping? If so, why can't you just use the weight modification factor and see if that evens things out?
I know you said you have the only Prindle, but aren't there any other types of cats on the island -- or are all the rest of them Hobie 16's?

If you are runing 405 on that boat I am very surprised you hav'nt run into a problem with the hulls delaminating under the strain in any wind over 15mph. I will admit I sailed with guy about 6'8" on the my boat once and it was never the same. Sort of heard this "Scoobydoo" type "BOING" of the hulls letting go forward of the beam low side but we were closer to 500lbs in a gust . Which is what you will probably create with the bigger Hobie main....You can always cut the main downand use the big jib. Goodluck Bob.

PTP: Im not sure, but I think we met at the Juana Good Time last year.....I certainly remember your boat name. Anyway, I have a fellow club member up here who would like to have those sails if their still available. Might you be at Slip to Ship in Ocean Springs MS this year (Memorial Day weekend)?
Jerome, Yep, that was probably me if you recognize the boat name. Unfortunately I have already promised them the catmech. They are pretty weathered. I think I will try to make it over there for the race, but not sure
