Howdy fellow cat people,

Who has the best deal on boat insurance? Does Homeowner's cover any part of it? I have an older boat so is it worthwhile to buy coverage against equipment breakage? What do they call that?

I have full coverage from BOAT/US on an I20. It's about $150/yr. My yearly memebership, which includes unlimited towing coverage (a bargain if you sail in the ocean) is about $90/yr.

I highly recommend you get both types of insurance, as they are very cheap (for cats, at least), and cover potentially large expenses. Check it out at http://www.boatus.com

Sail fast and have fun,

P.S. I tow my I20 with a 1982 Toyota Celica I bought 5 years ago for $1000. Needless to say, it has only liability insurance!

Usually, liability is covered for a sailboat under your homeowners. If you want extra "full coverage" insurance against theft or "natural event" damage, you have to buy full coverage through an agent. I got $3000 of full coverage through American National (my homeowners and cars are with them) for about $45 a year on a Hobie 17 that was kept in Orange Beach, AL (middle of hurricane alley on the gulf coast)
