Posts: 975 South Louisiana, USA | WOW!!!! What a poll! Now lets see, as 99% of us that don't know either one personally it would come down to a guess at best. Have they ever raced one another? If they did was it on identical boats? If not you need to add another selection... TIE! That is almost like your spouse saying "Does this make me look fat?" Be careful how you answer... Clayton P.S. Can we have a write in. | | | Re: Who is the better racer Mitch Booth or Randy Smyth

Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | (First: I didn't see it) but have any of you even heard the tale of Smyth coming in during the Worrell 1000 with a jammed daggerboard? Board won't come up, he comes screaming through the surf flying a hull, slides up through the finish line on the dry beach still on the wire with the hull and daggerboard clear in the air, working the main as the boat comes to a stand still and the ground crew grabs the lifted hull and unjams the board from below.
Granted, I've heard this through a friend of a friend of a friend who's sister saw it...but still.

Posts: 5,558 Key Largo, FL & Put-in-Bay, OH... | To me, there is no question at all as to which is the better racer.
But in a poll like this, the results are more likely to split across international lines -- more like root for the home boy, rather than being based upon specific performance records, whether against each other or independently of each other.
In other words, the results of the poll are more subjective than objective and probably not based upon history and facts.
This poll is more like voting for American Idol -- who do I think sang best tonight -- or who do I LIKE best even if they did not sing well tonight? | | | Re: Who is the better racer Mitch Booth or Randy Smyth

Posts: 1,449 | Folks, Back in 1986 I was involved in running the Australian A class National Titles. In one race an A class came flying into the start line on the committe boat end. There was a gap at the windard end between the fleet and committe boat. Just before he made the line the gap closed. This guy came in off the wire and flew in off th wire under the boom and threw all his weight on it backwinding the main. At the same time yelling at us "Don't Touch my Boat". He put each hull of his A class either side of the committe boat. His boat stopped, backed up and got a start at the windward end just behind the first boat over at that end. Not a bad start considering. It may not sound like much but it was very impressive to see. The sailor was Jay Booth. Mitch Booths dad. Where does the talent come from.
Regards, Phill

Posts: 6,049 Sebring, Florida. | A move like that takes lots of practice and big balls! But since Randy doesn't race F18's and rarely any small cats anymore, (He did just win the Corsair Nationals a couple weeks ago) and since Mitch races alot of F18's and smaller cats, the Formula 40 is the only place we will see them go head to head, what is the score there? Did they race Tornado's against each other in the 1988 Olympics? Oh yeah, and Smyth has an America's Cup win to his credit, along with that little round the world "Race" thingy, he did back in 2001. I think he has moved on to racing bigger boats and building sails. I'm sure they are both great guys and the rest of us could learn alot from them, too bad they are litteraly a world apart.
