I am trying to mount a compass to the tramp centerline just behind the mast. I was thinking of attaching grommets to the tramp and then mounting / dismounting the compass for racing. The question is can you attach the grommets on a rigged tramp (due to the tension on the fabric) or do I have to remove it and install the grommets?.

I was told I could use a hot nail or such to melt small holes in the tramp and use them to mount the compass.

Its a new trap so I am a little hesitant about any perforation...

just use a thick needle, look closely for the holes in the fabric [i'm assuming you will have mesh fabric] I would not use any heat!!!! the fabric is very easy to melt=> big[ger] wholes then wanted!!

Just use regular nuts and bolts and back up plate on the other side of the trampoline. For nuts and bolts the smaller size the better. I think that I have used size 8-32. make back up plate the same shape as your footprint of compass and drill holes in the same spots where your compass has.

If your trampoline is made out of mash then you should have no problem to push through small bolt.

Use stainless steel bolts and self lucking nuts.

We attached a compass in a similar fashion to our '04 Inter 20 for the Tybee 500. We just slowly worked some smallish screws (#8 I believe) through the trampoline material. No holes, just worked the screw between the weave in the fabric and tried to do so over a place with some reinforcement. The compass stayed just fine.

Thanks for the help. I liked the setup with a compass at each hull.

If you've got an inspection port in the hull that far forward, why not just mount it to the port hole cover? Of course, you wouldn't be able to sit on it, but you could switch with a flat port hole cover when you don't need the compas...

I never thought about that, but I think I would have to use bigger inspection port for those compasses. I have 2 compasses mounted on the each side of the boat – that is how I bought it.

I rarely use those I got GPS. Since they were installed already I just kept them that way.

All I did was mount a compass to a small paddle and then the paddle is bungeed to the tramp. I need to carry a paddle anyway and it seems to work fine for me; I've been using the same paddle/compass for over twelve years on three different cats.
