Folks,

Quite some time back there was a post regarding the development of (from memory) the Javelin A class.

The post indicated that after extensive videoing of the Flyer design it was decide the Javelin could be designed to further optimise performance in certain conditions and aspects of sail.

I would be interested in reading this post again. Does anyone happen to have a copy of it or remember the details.

Appreciate any info.

Hi Phill,

perhaps you refer to one of my postings of the beginning of 2001, when the Javelin A was launched.

I am not sure to be able to find a copy, anyway I can summarize for you the content:

the Javelin A class hulls were actually designed to optimise the performance of the Flyer expecially downwind.

BIMARE observed that the sterns of Nils Bunkemburg's design have a tendency to sink (lack of volume). Therefore Javelin's hull is somewhat fatter and flatter at the bottom than the Flyer's (from the daggerboard case aft). Anyway at any point of the submerged area of the hull the difference between the 2 designs is very small (never more than 1 cm).

The downwind problem was recognized by the same Nils Bunkemburg, who entered the 2001 A class Worlds with a modified version of the Flyer (much fatter and flatter at the sterns). Perhaps he went too much far.

From the daggerboard forward - at any point of the hull -the difference between the Flyer and the Javelin is always less than 0.5 cm.

Then the main difference between the 2 design is the bow:

the "strangely" shaped Javelin's bow is intended to increase the waterline lenght of the boat by 15 cm.

Phill,

I am sure that the boats will be more even than ever. The new one piece RIBA mast matches the bending characteristic of the Saarberg. Besides BIMARE is currently testing Goodall mains. Anyway there will be at least no 3 2002 BIMARE Javelin A from Italy at the 2002 Worlds (on sale after the Event at a reasonable price). According to my opinion the best helmsman will win. The only surprise may be Scott Anderson on the new Martin Fisher's boat (it is said that it is really a NEW diffent design): I hope to see it at the Javelin A and Javelin 2 Europeans in a couple of weeks
