Not the kind for a trailor. I have tried google searches,Home Depot etc. Jesus! A simple fiberglass box long enough for a rolled up mainsail, why is this such a hassle? I used to see them advertised everywhere,a bit pricey but now I don't care.! May day, May day,May Day..Pan! Pan! Pan! Securite! securite! Securite! Make me a painkiller quick!

I did one (8 feet long box): buy two plywood sheets (8X4). Think first to your dimensions. Ask to the home depot guy to do the cuts. Screw the parts together. Paint, put locks... et voila! mine works perfect --> cost 60 $

Only one thing: if your sail is wider than 8 feet it will be more complicate. For my tiger it is ok.

1. look up "hancor pipe company" on google.

2. Get phone number from their website.

3. Call 'em and discuss smooth-inside "cheap 15 inch pipe" They'll give you a model and a dealer near you. Expect to pay $120 for a 20 foot section - split with a sailing buddy. Stuff cuts with any kind of saw.

4. cut ends out of plywood. don't waste money on epoxy, use Spray on shellac from home depo.

Your cost: about 70 all up, assuming you or your buddy has old plywood lying around.

Two things about Hancor pipe for a sail box:

Because the pipe is ribbed the 15" i.d. pipe has a 17.7" o.d. Make sure you have clearance under your dolphin striker.

Hancor pipe is black. On a hot sunny day inside temps can get over 180 degrees F. This could be high enough to delaminate rudders or dagger boards.

Other than that it works great.

The style you would want is Hi-Q if I remember correctly.

We have boxes in stock and ready to ship. I have one DEMO model I'd discount a little bit too.

I have a 10 foot section of 10 inch pipe in the garage and will sell for $20. You have to be close to Austin, Texas.

After some recon I sense a monopoly worthy of the Sherman trust Act of the 1920's. Murray's sells a box for $800. The manager sells 8 of these and thusly calls sailssport. Sailsport WAS selling theirs for $440 or so. After the little chat with the folks at Murray now their box is $750! They claim demand, I say price fix. C'mon assholes it's a [censored] fiberglass box! $800.00!!!!!!!!! Piss off the both of you,I'll never buy any Murray's crap again it's overpriced rubbish. Heck my boat cost me 2k! Do I need to pay almost half of the price of my cat to store some sails & beach chairs? Hell no! I was prepared to go to 500.00 but this is ridiculous.

Guess I'm off to Home Depot for some plywood. Really lame guys, very lame. "May the sewers of Bangladesh back up into your rice krispes."

I agree - I'm surprised that the industry (or some inventive catsailor) hasn't figured this one out yet.

Has anyone thought about using those roof cargo containers that your local sears carries? I don't know the price on them, but they can't be $800. Thats just ridiculous.

My catbox is made out of 1/2" thick plywood, making my trailer VERY heavy. However, the thing is built like a brick ****house and I'm not worried about it coming apart on me.

Hi,

Hobie has one (again). The original Toybox. You have to buy it from a Hobie Dealer (Sorry, no mail order). It's $364

Another alternative is to use a piece of 24"X x96" plywood as a "floor", then bend a piece of 48" x 96" Type I PVC sheet 1/8" thick over it and screw into the sides of the plywood. It's only $51 Mcmaster.com P/N 8747K213 UV resistant, waterproof, needs no paint. It forms an arched container (like the toybox) 24 inches across (obviously), by about 17 inches high. You can use plywood for the ends, or make the whole thing out of PVC sheet!

I fit two H17 mainsails and the h17 superjib in one.

I'm making a custom roof rack that will incorporate sail tubes. Should be done by the end of the summer.

Hi,

After inquiring at my local Hobie Dealer about a Toybox, they misunderstood and ordered one for me. I'm broke right now so I don't want it. Is anyone else in the Northeast area interested? (I haven't told them I don't want it yet - they keep calling me to come pick it up). It was $364 plus shipping and possibly tax (??)

Steve

$364 +S&H seems a little steep. You can probably build one for under $100.
