I know there are a lot of 6.0's out there that are still active in racing I just signed up for the Nationals. Lets get a fleet to Racine

Lots of activities are planned and a great venue. Make a vacation out of it and bring the family.

I would love to go. I even have the same boat that you have N6.0na but can some one explain this to me

WHY THE RACE WAS SCHEDULED FOR THE MIDDLE OF THE WEEK!!!! (Tuesday through Friday)

Would it be smarter to schedule it over weekend that way I and probably many more people would join? My vacation timetable has been already planed and there is no room for additional 4 days off.

If you want I keep my N6.0 in Evanston, IL we can get together and “curt some waves” there is even race course set up. I have been asking other sailors if they race but I can not find anyone. I know people in Michigan and Wisconsin race but I’m too lazy to set up my boat every time I go sailing. I like it on the beach where is at.

So sailors from Evanston area – let’s get together and RACE.

Nationals are traditionally held for 4 to 5 days. The reason I have always been given is that weather could prevent racing on certian days and this way you at least get a shot at a few days of racing. It also gives those who drive longer distances a reason to show up and participate.

Nationals and weekends

The duration of a championship depends on the class and how competitive it is. For instance, the Tornado class will limit their championship racing to 2 races per day and figure on an hour or so per each race. At most they will do 3 races…. (If its blowing… the crews are pretty much done after that anyway). One reason is that a breakdown could wipe you out of the event if 4 races were held. So, this means that your championship will get stretched out a bit to get 10 races in. This of course is very different from the attitude… get as many race in a day in as you can.

There is also some sociology involved in the week day championships. In order to make the event go… you need a core group of people willing to travel, since you have to collect them from all over the country, you give people the weekend to drive to and from the event. It takes a big commitment to do the nationals anyway and so the weekday schedule seems to work best for the most people of the core group that goes racing all the time. The 6.0 class has not had a class event in a while, so you probably don’t have that group of committed sailors to make a nationals happen.

Finally, there are issues of boat traffic in the racing area… if you tried to race in Annapolis on the weekend…. you would be fighting a lot of pleasure boat traffic. Moving to the weekdays gives you flat water and the bay to yourself.

You might want to use the Catfight Event as your 6.0 class nationals. It’s a three day regatta and it might serve the interests of the surviving class members who could make it to a more regional championship.

That is a REALLY good point, Mark, and it is true of many venues. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

This year the Star class nationals on the Bay had races on the same day as the Naval Academy graduation, which was on a Wednesday. At the graduation every year the Blue Angels fly a show, and it's a fun thing to do to anchor out in the mouth of the Severn and Annapolis harbor to watch the Blue Angels. There's usually quite a few boats anchored out there, and this year was no exception.

As the wind had freshened during the day (while everybody was anchored), the committee lengthened the course for the Stars and moved it more out into the Bay.

At the end of the show everybody weighs anchor and heads for home - LOTS of boats motoring around the Bay to various destinations funneling out of the mouth of the Severn. Everything from jet skis to motoring sailboats to 50+ foot semi-displacement tsunami generating power cruisers. Lots of that traffic right through the Star race course, which just happened to be in the prime navigation areas for points south. I could only imagine what was going through the committee's and participant's minds...
