What's the farthest anyone has ever sailed a H16? Has anyone ever done a trans-oceanic sail? Thanks.

I have not heard of a trans-oceanic on a Hobie 16, but they used to be the class that raced the Worrell 1000 back in the late 1970's and early '80's. That was before they started making it a "cruise," with the sailors stopping for the night at motels. So I guess 1,000 miles is the farthest I have heard of on a Hobie 16.

Even back then, when they were doing it originally on the Hobie 16's, the boats would come in to shore at checkpoints and switch out a crew member and head right back out through the surf, day and night.

Every so often I hear from a certain guy who plans to sail a Hobie 16 across the Pacific Ocean from California. I try to discourage him. I hope it's not you.

No....not me. I had heard that there had been a couple of guys who sailed from Miami to Bermuda and was curious about how far someone had sailed in a 16.

I don't know about Miami to Bermuda, but there a few guys who have sailed from Key West to Cuba and then back -- about 90 miles each way.

There were two guys that sailed a TheMightyHobie18 Magnum from Europe across the Atlantic and ended up in the Carribean. They made it but were not in very good shape when they arrived.

I always thought it would be cool to sail in between the Hawaiian Islands, or from Florida to the Bahamas. Neither is that far, but from my experience in Texas when you get out of sight of land you feel very small floating around on an oversized coffee table.

I'm boatless.

It's been done but you really gotta check the weather before trying. When the trades are blowing it can get very hairy very fast. From my house I can see a well defined windline. On the inside, the water is pretty flat but the wind is still blowing at a decent speed. On the outside, it's wall to wall white caps with the wind piping up to 25 knots plus. This is the place if you like heavy air. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

Years ago, on this board or one of the defunct bulletin boards, the tale of two guys crossing the Atlantic was often told. I think they started in France and ended in the Carribean somewhere. They realized soon into the trip, that this adventure was a mistake, but they figured it was too late to turn back. They were wet all the time and developed serious skin problems. At the end of the trip, they went immediately to the hospital.-That's the story the best I can remember. If you ask on the main board, I bet you can scare up the story there, in more detail.
