One dumb question (or another). This weekend I had one very slow tack on my I20 upwind. the stays were different by only one hole. (tighter on the upwind side when slow). Anybody ever have this problem? know how to fix it? thoughts on why it could happpen.

Maybe a dumb solution.

I noticed that my boat speed had suffered on the day you are talking about, when a huge tumbleweed looking thing was on my leeward rudder. When I tacked, it was so big, it didn't budge, had to clear them. If you had something similar near the top of the board or rudder, might explain it. If near the top on the windward side, it wouldn't be in the water much. just a thought.

How's was your mast rotation? On my old 6.0 when one the boat was uneven the mast would not rotate as easily, that caused a change in sail shape and therefore less power.

Just a thought.

Hi Marc

One adjuster setting in the side stay would only translate to a couple inches at most , with a looser rig {not bar tight } this is not a factor even in light air.

-One thing I,ve experienced though mainly distance racing where your on one tack or gybe for hours at a time in larger seas is similarly finding it very difficult to change directions and sides of the boat and often takes a couple minutes to get settled and going full speed again., but this has more to do with being left or right handed ,-{ oriented } and is more of a phyc problem ,

--racing does that sometimes . -It may be something similar to a lesser degree.

Have a repair question from a U K -I-20 Catsailor on the rotator bar ,-copy below --have any repaired this ?

-copy =

Wonder if anyone has come across this problem before. We have 3 Inter 20's in my club ( all 1999 models) all three have problems where the mast rotation studs exit the carbon mast. Usually on one side they have moved and created an elongated slot, cutting into the carbon mast wall. This makes the mast leak, gives you different rotation angles on each tack and is a little worrying long-term. Any similar experiences or ideas on repair welcome

I have had my I20 for 2 years....no problem with the rotator. There are about a dozen around here in San Diego, and I've not heard of any others having the problem you described.

You said they were in the UK....could the masts be from a different supplier than the US version?

I had an I-20 for awhile and did not experience this problem myself but heard about a few folks that did. The cause was the owners did not keep the through bolt tight on the mast rotator. This allowed the rotator to have some slop and thus causing some wear. You can either fix this by adding some epoxy to the holes on each side of the mast and then cleaning this up with a drill bit or maybe epoxy a compression sleeve similar to the one used on the diamond wire tang on top of the mast. I would at first just try to fill the void with epoxy instead of using a compression sleeve. The use of a compression sleeve would probably mean you should change the size of the bolt or increase the hole size. You might be able to get a smaller size equal strength bolt made of some exotics. (Titantium or high resistance stainless steel 17.4 PH. 17.4 PH stainless is stronger but subject to corrosion if surface is not polished, passivated and properly maintained. You can not keep 17.4 SS submerged in salt water otherwise it is OK)

Good luck with the reseal of the rotator bolt.
