I am a novice hobie sailor with a '79 16. Would the total boat handling video be useful for me? I need work on tacking without getting stuck, a better idea of how to use the sheet and traveler more efficiently, back winding the jib, and starting and stopping. It seems like a lot of info packed into 30 minutes. Has anyone else used this video, and what did you think? Thanks!

Haven't seen the video but have seen posts of people who liked it.

There are plenty of posts on doing a tack properly especially from h14 sailors as they have no jib to help.

I have three of Rick White`s Videos - including "Total Boat Handling". Since I had no one to teach me, I thought the videos would be a good idea - they were. There IS a lot of information packed into the 30 minute videos, and this is successfully accomplished because the videos tend to get "right down to business" ...they don`t waste videotape on unnecessary stuff.

If you`re a newbie and trying to learn, I would recommend the videos as well as a good Catamaran sailing book. These references and tools helped me out a lot.

Thanks, Dave, for the plug. We did work hard on those videos.

Total Boat Handling is quick skim over all parts of sailing and racing a cat. The rest are a break down of all the components.
For example, in "Total Boat Handling" tacking is briefly covered but is thoroughly covered "Cat Roll Tacking and Upwind Sailing."
If you are only concerned about your tacking, then "Cat Rolltacking, etc" is the best video for that purpose.

Good luck,
Rick

I would get all 5 of Rick's Tapes. I love the and am going to share them now with daughter and grand daughter as I am training them. Ashleigh (GD) has 5 years (started at 7) experience as a crew with me ( 2 on the wire). She is getting stick time now. I would also recommend you get "Catamaran Racing for the 90's". I have 26 years in and I still learned a few things form the book. Great job Rick.
