Saturday was the High Holiday of Cat Sailing in New England, Fleet 448's Annual Island Hop. I posted my account/report on the Beachcats Yahoo Group, but wanted to share a little here too. First off, a BIG THANKS to John Smith for running this wonderful event! I can't remember Rick's exact words, but on the first of his videos he makes a comment about how in the sport of catsailing, you will meet the nicest people you'll ever meet. I got to the parking lot at Gooseberry at 6:30, and all day as I looked around I heard Rick's voice and words. This brings me to the inclusiveness issue of the Hobie edict. John runs the Hop as an "open event", but many don't know that, and feel they are not welcome. I was thrilled Saturday to see Cris Titcomb, and Barry Moore show up. I don't know Chris very well, I've enjoyed watching him and Nate race, and followed their campaigns as a fan. I met Barry years ago at one of the regattas, and then at a Hobie 101 Seminar he helped organize and run in New Bedford in 2000. They did a great job promoting, and running that event! I experienced his contribution to the sport first hand. They are both people I don't know well,but I admire and like what I've seen of them. Many of you may think I'm whacked, but a big part of what I enjoy about catsailing has become the sharing of the experience with friends. I wasn't looking for that 11 years ago when I saw all the sticks up at Gooseberry, and wanted to see what was going on. John Smith, John Swiniarski(?), Jim Riddle, and Tedd DuVarney, were so welcoming that day I was back within two weeks, and hooked for life! Among the Team Goose regulars, we address eachother as brother/sister. That is how deep the bonds are. The Island Hop really is a sacred day for me. That spirit of brotherhood is a palpable thing in that parking lot at The Goose, (and out on the water, or the beach at Quick's Hole!) We are priviledged to be able to enjoy the sport of catsailing, and the freedom it represents. I feel honored when I can share my day with great sailors, so every one of you that shows up, adds to the richness of my experience. While I didn't get to share as much time with all of you as I would've liked, we shared the day, and that great sunset!Thanks for being there!

I live in Little Compton. Wish I'd known. Although dont have a boat that isn't in mothballs, gooseberry is a stones throw from me. I know barry and chris too, they are really nice guys. Anyway, I hope we can grow catsailing in New england more. I really hopw that i can participate more soon.

Charlie, Nice to hear from another local sailor! There is a group of cat sailors that sail out of Gooseberry almost every Saturday called "Team Goose". It doesn't matter what brand of cat you have, just get there early enough to get a parking spot! I rarely get down these days, but hope to see you there sometime! There are frequent opportunities to crew as well, though mostly on Hobies.

Fleet 448 is having another event at Gooseberry this Sunday 8/20/06. There will be some Hobie Races, and Fun Sailing with a cookout afterwards. Be there if you can!
