I have been thinking about trying to put together a “just for fun” and/or rally type of race. Something different.

The concept I was thinking about kind of goes like this:

To participate in this race you must bring a “team”.

Your team consists of 3 boats (6 sailors or Crews 1, 2 and 3) that meet the boat criteria of 16ft, 18ft, and 20ft. For example: H16, Tiger, and H20; or F16, F18, and F20.

Hypothetical team name “Bad News”

Tom K with his H16

Rob J with a H20

Me (Bob) with a Tiger

The goal is obviously to have fun, but to get a bunch of sailors sailing different boats that they normally would not, in a “team” spirited event.

Race Option 1:

Typical buoy race, but you must switch boats between races with one of your teammates. I.e. The 1st race you sail the H16, the second race you sail the Tiger and the third race you race the H20. The goal being that each crew within your team sails each boat the same number of times. After 3, 6 or 9 races the sum of the team scores are calculated and the lowest team score wins.

Race option 2:

Rally race off the beach to a mark off shore and back to the beach. All the boats start together. Same concept (every crew in your team sails each boat) however the team that has all three boats back to the beach first wins that series.

Race option 3:

Team Racing. Normal windward leeward course however you need make sure your H16 crew has clean air and can finish the race. The team that has all three of their boats across the Finnish line wins. There’s a lot more to team racing but hopefully you get the point.

You can have all sorts of fun on the beach with awards such as the best partying team or the ugliest team, or the team that flipped the most and so on ….

Obviously you really would need to trust your teammates not to destroy your boat. Could be an issue.

Has anyone tried this before? Any thoughts good and/or bad.
