Anyone got any hints about what the wind is like around Lake Carlyle? Ive heard the groundhogs can open your cooler, drink your beer and eat your grub, but whats the wind like?
Supposedly it is relatively flat, so wind should be good as it is not impeded by hills, and the lake is 12 ft deep or so. But thats all Ive heard.

We had some customers in last week and one of them lived near the lake...unfortunately not a sailor...but he did say it gets choppy VERY quickly...geesh...12ft? I guess it would.

The locals are saying it is flat water even when the wind is up. I'm also being told that we'll see all sorts of conditions in the week - 4 to 25 knots and all in-between. The message that I'm getting is that, for this time of year, the lake is NOT a light-air venue... unfortunately, I would have preferred that considering the competition.

Of course, no matter WHAT ANYONE says, I fully expect to hear what is said at EVERY regatta I travel to - "Gee, it NEVER does this here!"

Perhaps that's because the wind comes up suddenly?

Ain't that the truth. I fully expect exactly what John has said here. I expect a race in 5 and a race in 25 with everything in between.

The lake isn't quite as shallow as John says. It's very uniform in depth where we sail 15-30ft. There will be no issues with hitting bottom in the area where we will sail.

The wind is front driven. We get lots of fronts through that time of year and that should give us some good wind.

The locals think it's choppy because there are so many lakes around here that are really small and down in canyons. The locals steer clear of Carlyle because it's wide open and can generate chop which bass boats don't like too much. In general we sail in very flat water compared to other venues.

Thanks Mike,
looks like we will have a rather large caravan of RV's and double stacks coming from the Carolina's and Georgia, so be on the lookout!
...anyone know AAA's number? No, not alcoholic's anonymous...the auto people!

If you're a member of Boat US, you can add Trailer Boat US for another $10. It's like having AAA for your trailer...
