Posts: 393 Camden NSW | Hi there just picked up a mossie today in sydney and Im just after a few answers to a few puzzles. How long is the forestay if you are running a headsail? Is there any picks of the jib tracks/blocks which I could get a few ideas from? Does anybody know how old the boat is? the sail number is 1635. and does any one know where I can get a tuning guide from eg. rig tension, mast rake etc.
Thanks heaps | | | Re: new to the mossie

Welcome to the mozzie class. If you look on the Victorian Mozzie Website you'll find alot of info that may help you. There is also a tuning guide available too. The National Mozzie website has all the legal measurments for birdles etc. Hope this helps.
Look forward to seeing you on the water.

The tuning guide available through the Victorian Mosquito Asn. gives some good info on bridle length (jib setup) and associated stresses. If the bridle is too short there is too much stress pulling the hulls together as you pull the mainsheet tight. If the bridle is too long then the jib is set too high and the jib mounting point on the trampoline is too far back and everyone just gets tangled up when tacking. The effort on the sail is also higher than it needs to be.
Happy racing.

Peter

Posts: 943 East Gippsland, Australia | Hi Wild Which part of Sydney will you be sailing? Have you met Ben Cutmore? He sails on Pittwater. Get yourself a copy of the "Building Rules & Regulations" at the NMCC web site. They are not too daunting and you will find answers to many questions there. For instance, rule 13.5, the bridle height must be a minimum of 380mmm above the deck. In practise, not all sloops go this low. Some aim to be level with the boom gooseneck.

Posts: 135 Bendigo, Victoria, Australia | Sorry Wild,
I just lumped all the info together. The tuning manual is not a downloadable item, it can be purchased for $15 + $3 postage. To find the details go to the Vic Mozzie website, click on VMCA at the top of the screen, select shop>>>, then clothing + gear and you'll find out how to order one. I don't know what the rig tensions are or should be, so cannot help you much in regard to this.
Hope this makes things a bit clearer.

Just have to find out how to get the right forestay for the jib set up and talking to mick it sounds like I have to do a bit of work as i dont have any type of halyard to raise the jib with or block at that either. Thanks you guys u've all been a great help | | | Re: new to the mossie

Unregistered | Hi Wild,
I think one of the easiest ways to set up a jib halyard is to use 3mm or even 2mm spectra (low stretch). Just use you'r existing forestay, tie a length of spectra to the top of your forestay then tie a very small block at the right height for your jib length, tieing it around the forestay at the same time to hold it in position. This becomes the halyard block.
Then run your spectra halyard through the block, this needs to be long enough to go from the bottom of forestay to the halyard block and back. You attach one end to the top of the jib, pull it up from the other end which you can then tie off with tension to set the jib luff tight.
