I'm sure you've all read about the floods down here in Central Texas. After considering how lucky I am that we didn't lose friends and after fixing the leaks in my roof, I'm ready to go sailing. After all, the sun's finally out, right?

Well, all the lakes are closed, due to debris on the larger reservoir lakes, or high current on the narrow, river-like lakes. Even if lakes were "open", most public access points like marinas and ramps are underwater.

It occurs to me I now know what it must feel like for our northern brethren to read in wintertime, about someone down south having a great day of sailing.

Water water everywhere, and not a lake to sail on!!!

What happens in the great white north is this (especially the last few years)....gobs of the white stuff in between record hi's, so it doesn't stay to snowmobile on, or ski on, the lakes don't freeze hard enuf to icedrink, i mean ice fish, or skate, or ice boat etc. Oh well, you just learn to keep the subscriptions paid up, or go south.

hope you can sail soon

You can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning !

yeah, sure, move on up here to long island sound, where you can join the rest of us sailors singing the same tune during the no-decent-wind "powerboat season" that generally covers all of july and august!

In addition to Texas City, you will find Lake Somerville to be just fine for sailing. We did not get the rains that Austin and San Antonio did. I was sailing on Somerville last weekend and, despite the light winds, sailing was fine (the lake is not that high and you can still put in at the normal spots).

Cheers

Well, the water has receded enough, and Lake Travis is open. I went sailing twice this week. Tuesday evening I dodged some storms in my Ensign, and only saw one other sailboat.

This morning I went solo on my NACRA 5.5 sloop and had the whole lake to myself in single trap winds and no chop. Beat the h*** out of going to work.

Too bad the motorboat ramps can't stay underwater longer, and we just have a sailboat-only lake till fall!
