Hi there

I'm nearly ready for paint. Any suggestions on brands (which would be available in Oz)

I am told a two part epoxy primer would be the way to go for starters, then two part top coats.

I'm going to be different and go for WHITE <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />, but not a blinding eye draining white. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

Regards

Thanks Richard

Dulux has been suggested by another man in the know, and theres a Dulux Trade Centre about an hour from here, so thats good enough for me.

Thanks

No worries mate. We haven't got any water anyway <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Our lakes bone dry, sheep could graze on it, bloody drought <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />

I'm aiming for the Nationals at Christmas, but someone told me today its 10 weeks away, so unless I pull my finger out, I'll be aiming at the Vic States. But you're right, I've been down the 'paint it quick' road before, and won't be doing that again. I've been out almost every day this week filling and long boarding. And will be doing that for a least the rest of this week.

Where are you? What are you sailing?

Regards

ARC catamarans are painted with Sherwin Williams auto paint, very tough stuff. I have the specs if you are interested.

The toughest stuff on the planet is Dupont Imron. It's used frequently in the marine industry. It also coats most airplanes and some folks use it for cars. It's a two part paint with catalyst and it is also not terribly inexpensive.

Jake,
Not sure if I'm reading this right.

"not terribly inexpensive" = not terribly cheap
ie bloody expensive.

Gooday Matt I just finished painting my stingray with perfection I painted it pure white and what a sight if your going for a colour its a good idea to get an undercoat thats compatable some brands you can mix the undercoat 50% with the first of your colour coats so any scratches arent so dramatic. Its recommended with perfection and the undercoat is part of an overall system.

I would tend to go for what I am using on my paper tiger. It is made by wattyl and is called 'timber preserver' . it is a two part epoxy coating and is quite thin to start with and you generally thin it 50% for first coat, 25% for second and straight for final.. it is amazing stuff and penetrates right into the grain of the wood and will repel water unlike if you got a scratch in it say with just normal highbuild / primer. and the beauty of it is once you have finished with it the topcoat goes straight onto it.

Hi All

The hulls will be coated with a diluted epoxy first that soaks into timber, then the undercoat, then topcoats. Decks have a addditional layer of fibreglass cloth (75gm) which helps stiffen the hulls up and will hopefully stop those cracks in the paintwork which seem to appear at the main beam - bows, as appeared on my mossie after a few years.

With the help of Phill, I've found Luxepoxy White Primer, and Luxathane Top Coats. (DULUX)

Regards

Please follow all the safety procedures for your paint. We want to hear about the boat not set a reprint of a newspaper article like:

"we thought he was just staring at his new boat (he does that a lot). It wasn't until we noticed his beer was empty that we realized the paint killed him"

Killing all the insects in my garage with paint fumes made a big impression on me.

I will be applying the undercoat (Luxepoxy) myself and following the directions. The top coats I will be handing over to a friend of mine, who uses these types of paints regularly (and if I were to put any runs in the paint, I would be so dirty on myself, I would cry like a girl).

if you are putting the undercoat on just do the top coat its easier to work with than the undercoat dont worry about crying like a girly man the first time you take it out somebody will drop a mast on it (dont gasp happened to a mate of mine) or some bar****d will scratch it aka new car sindrome just paint and go sailing you'll enjoy it more
thanks richard

**** O' The Lake Marathon.

We had 120 cats on the start line that year with a mass start.
A boat passing to wndward clipped his tiller and spun him so a Nacra 5.2 put a decent sized hole is his port hull. Quickly he tached onto port to make it to shore before he sunk and a Hobie 18 put two holes in his standboard hull.

I was on the the start boat that year. We towed him to shore.

He took it pretty bad. Gave up cat sailing and went sailing 18ft skiffs on the harbour.

Regards,
Phill
