"Gee Wally, I don't understand why Dad's so ticked off that I hit his sails with a little 600 grit paper, he said he wanted to paint them?"

That has to be an adhesive back applique of some sort.

Our working sails were done with Signwriting Vinyl. Our spinakers had the images cut and sewn into them.

I have not had any experience with painting sails, but my recomendation would be to start calling up sail makers. Check this out - http://na.northsails.com/Graphics/Upwind.htm

This is from Norths in North America..... Try calling Norths AUS and if they don't do it, you may be able to deal with the NA loft through them.... Or go through the NA loft direct.

Alternatively, talk to a sign writer. They can also do 'Digital Imaging' where they can print photo quality pictures on sign writing vinal or canvas.

"For full colour printing we can take most graphic formats such as .jpg, .gif, .tif, .eps, .ai, and most bitmap or vector formats. We use an IBM format but can usually convert from MAC (not always). We also have scanners and can scan "Camera Ready" art. The better the original art the better the final result.

Artwork can be supplied on a computer disk (your hard drive), zip disk (100MB), 3.5" floppy disk (1,44MB), CD. You can also e-mail your file (if the size is less than 2MB)"

Give Neil Newton (one of our sponsors - mention us) a call from Sign*A*Rama at Annandale....

I believe Gashby's sail was done this way.

Wally,

Most of the graphics are done with contour cut vinyl. When they get to full color (like Asby's "girl") the vinyl is first printed, then contour cut, and applied. The large printed vinyl is commonly used for entire vehicle advertising wraps you see more commonly now and the same vinyl works very well on sails...go to any sign shop and you can probably get what you need - but I can tell you as someone that is in the business, it's more expensive than you would think!
