California in June?

Big Bear Lake (I think), not the coast. Eric has posted some pix in other threads that look fantastic. He'll come up with more details, but go ahead and pencil it in.
2,751 miles from my house. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> So do we pick you up Tom on our way out?

fuel expense: 2,751 x 2= 5502 mi round trip. Divide by 15? mpg. Half that? 366.8 to 733.6 gallons. Times $3 per gallon? $1100 - $2200. Is that close?

I'm assuming stacked boats and two people.

On a fuel efficient vehicle yes, that is close. Factor onto that, food, sleeping accomodations. I was thinking about an RV, but the price skyrockets. It is a pretty expensive trip.

Shipping the boats back and forth and flying out will be cheaper.

I am still throwing numbers together.

I don't think shipping the boats is a problem, but how 'bout the masts? I've never done either one.

5 signed up. Need some more. I'd like to say I got my a$$ kicked by all East Coast F16s.

Talked with Matt today and he confirmed that Team VMI as well as THE CHUCK (Team Butterfly) and Seth would be there. so that brings the F16 total up to 8. I've left a message for Ed & Steph (new F16) to inquire about them making the trip ... this would be their first multi-day regatta on the F16 (but not their first race!!! ... very competitive on the H-16).

So Tom ... bring it on ... pretty sure you'll find some good competition at this years Tradewinds.

When my friends go on their annual November pilgrimage to Aruba from the UK they can fit up to 8 Tornado's including masts and all their equipment and gear into a 40ft container, they have been known to take two containers and put a RIB and additional Cats in the second. The whole weeks package works out at approx £1,600 (container, flights and accomodation). Obviously these containers are shipped from the UK to Aruba so transporting yours by land may be cheaper and quicker?

Beleive it or not, I just got a price quote, that is actually cheaper to buy new boats get them delivered and re-sell them. Its crazy expensive. The problem I see is the price quote I recieved is on a 53ft long by a 9 foot tall container,

That is a special container and you don't need it. 40 foot container is far more standard and should be fine, if not much cheaper.

Is there any local knowledge to help me get through South Florida/Dade County any quicker? When to get on the turnpike? Avoid the turnpike? Etc. Mapquest puts me on the turnpike in Orlando - sound right? I'd love to pick up even 30 minutes.

I'll be coming from the North. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Tom, as soon as you hit FL, get on I75 ASAP!

After alligator alley, head south towards MIami on I75 (you have not gotten off)

Just after Miramar pkwy exit, is the exit to the Turnpike I think it says Homestead. Get on the turnpike then. Go all the way till you hit US1. Cant go wrong. You will only pay around 4 bux of tolls compared to 20+ comming from Orlando.

When are you comming down?

I'll be arriving in Islamorada around midnight Thursday, barring any travel problems. I've booked a room at the same hotel you are staying. Plan to set up the boat Fri AM and sail in the PM. Crew is flying in Thursday PM with wife. Crews always get the best part of the deal.

Thanks for the directions. Wasn't sure if there was a preferred way to navigate around Miami.

Yeah actually there is. Make sure you drill this into your brain and learn it, live and abide by it!

DONT GO INTO MIAMI!

Honestly, avoid Miami at all cost. Specially towing a boat. Took me 4+ hours from my house to Key Largo, which is only probably a 70 mile trip
