As the title says i am in the market for a new boat, and have decided that the mosquito MK1 will be the best option as i have sailed one in south africa and like the feel of the boat.

The boat i am looking at is 1714. Has any one got much info on the boat. Most likely i will pick it up a couple of days before the Nationals, so i was wondering if people who are new to the class are welcome. I do know how to sail, i've had the last 6 years in lasers some time match racing aswell, but still am a junior, the question i am leading to is there a big junior base at the nationals at all? or would i race with just the Open class.

Also does any one know of a mosquito for sale in Victoria for under 5000, there is only one on the mossie site at the moment and that is just to expensive.

Need to take delivery by the nationals aswell

I can be corrected if I'm wrong but to sail in the nationals you'll need a Yachting Australia Silver Card, Public Liability Insurance on your boat and you'll need to join the association which can be done at the nationals.

There is no dedicated Junior Comp. All sailors sail in either the Mk1 or Mk2 races.

Hi Tom, I have raced against 1714 for a few years, you should come down to Christies sailing club on Saturday at midday, check out the rest of the fleet and sail 1714. Easier to work out the condition and value of a boat when you have 4 or 5 others sitting next to it, any other questions just ask on the forum or PM me.

Got the silver card apart of my Royal Geelong YC membership, been sailing lasers for a few years now. As for insurance can be orgainised quickly, and the membership has been 1/2 orgainised if i can get a boat in time

The seller said to come down but my location prohibits it as im in Geelong so would be buying it sight unseen for the Nationals(just happened to be in the right spot and time for me). Do you know the rough condition from a 3rd party point of view?

I sailed Laser Nationals at RGYC a couple of years ago, good venue.

So you dont exactly recommend? It's just seriously hard for me to get across unless im going to stay for nationals and with no boat secure the trip really isnt worth it. And from what i can find there dosnt seem to be any for sale in VIC other then one for 8000, which is to high, im really looking for one under 5

Are you after foam sandwich or timber?

Keeping in mind I haven't actually asked him about this, but, Matt Kelly at Victorian Sailing Supplies in Seaford, has a Mossie that he built (timber) and would probably sell it if poked with a stick, hes into Fireballs now.

You would have to talk to him about whats required to get it going, but it has hardly been used, is light and has been undercover (shedded) all its life.

Theres no harm in asking.

I really dont mind what the boat is made of, favour foam as it is less of a hassle up keep wise. But am happy both ways. I'll give him a call tomorrow, hopefully it is what im looking for

I have known the Mossie in question and Matt for years now, first saw it when I went to look at a big cat he was building for a mutual aqquaintance,it was outside the shed he was building the big cat in with no hatches in it, I begged him to cover it up, must be nearly 10 years ago.

Have been trying to get him to fix it up or sell it ever since. Recently it has lived in the roof of the building he runs buisness out of, Matt said he wants to replace the decks and then sell it, but he has been busy building new Fireball dinghies <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />.

I am told it was a fast boat, very light timber with carbon frames. Maybe you can talk him in to something Tom? <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />.

do you know more about the carbon frames? Why, how and the result?

1714 is a good plywood boat. It has been well looked after by Gordon, always garaged. He has used the new Irwin sail 10 times maybe, not much anyway. As it has mostly been sailed in salt water you might look at changing beams when you have some downtime if you purchased it and maybe update some hardware, that would be more personal choice rather then a necessity. Certainly Gordon could sail it for the rest of the season and a few more without much doing much work on it. Very good two pack paint.

With Jetstar flying out of Avalon it would cost you about $250 to fly to ADL and hire a car for a day, to me it makes more sense then buying unseen.

I can take some photos if you want, Gordon lives around the corner from me.

I have attached a pic from when we where tuning up the Irwin, it is a couple of months old, mostly a picture of the sail but you can get an idea of the what the boat is like.

don't realy know a lot more about the frames. I assume it was done for light weight and stiffness. A lot of Mossies use ply & foam frames, reasonably light but they take on weight with time, carbon wouldn't do this. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

We had sailed timber boats throughout our sailing days and when Matt built the boat, they were just things that he wanted and could do at the time.

From memory they were just a piece of thin foam (airex or similiar) sandwiched with two layers of carbon cloth, from memory described at the time as very wanky (cool) <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
