I read an article in the St. Pete Times on Tuesday from the Palm Beach Post. Very sad...

(He) hitched the 9 1/2-foot Snark sailboat behind Edmonds's van and drove to a boat ramp. He had been teaching his roommate to sail and offered Monday to test the waters before letting Edmonds take his turn out.

The wind was churning up white caps in the gray water. "He seemed to be OK with that," Edmonds said.

No life jacket, no experience, POS boat, no brains. It's people like that that give sailors a bad reputation.

Some sailors may remember Lake Mangonia, it used to be the site of many regattas and so many wind surfers you couldn't find a place to setup. now it's always empty not sure why.
It is a sad story but why anyone would go out on a day like that in any kind of boat, it was nasty, probably a little worst than the Steeplechase weather.
The guy doing the teaching is the one that is missing, and he was thinking of sending a rookie out!
I don't think that gives sailors a bad rap as that was just plain stupid.
