It looks like that thing went airborne a few times.

That is some twisted [noodle], but I'd probably be the first to sign up if they asked for volunteers....

Very slow, I'd think the top of the mast would be lower than the hulls.

Damn, that is insane. I want one, if anyone notices a used one for sell tell me.

Could they not have a little more main up. It didn't look like their hull was even trying to lift, wouldn't they be faster with one hull just off the water or do I sound like and idiot?

As a matter of fact, that boat is for sale...no mast on it at the moment though.

Here is a link to a video of Cheyenne (Playstation after being renamed) being hauled out
http://www.sailinganarchy.com/editor/audio_video.php#cheyennehaulout
Team Adventure at 105' is on drydock about 5 minutes away from me. I bet it's for sale too, it has a mast, just missing a good section of its port bow.

I think that video was taken well before Playstation had its bows extended. IIRC when I saw it in person, the bows extended much more beyond the front front beam.

Go read "The Race" by Tim Zimmerman. It will give you an idea of what can happen when these boats are driven to the edge.

coming from big boat sailing as much as I love that type of weather you do end up quite nervous and worried

Call me a kill-joy but it seems to me that the Playstation crew has some control issues. The boat is going all over the place but doesn't look like it is speeding ahead.

As contrast look at this open 60 tri power along in very similar conditions. Also note that at 4 min 20 second a new and much better music clip is chosen and God it is one of the best music/video combinations ever. This music for the first 4 min is crap.

Also note the guy running to the bows over the netting at the end of the clip, I'm sure his heart in beating heavily in his chest.

I have to disagree. Go look at both clips again. Remember, Playstation is 125' vs. the 60' Tri. The conditions that Playstation is sailing in (Looks like 40 knots of wind) looks to be about twice the wind of the Tri (I guess 20 knots). White foam everywhere vs. almost no whitecaps. Look at the size of the waves that are tossing a 125' cat into the air, now look at the relative calm for the 60' tri. I wish we could have seen them side by side in both clips though. Picture a boat HALF as long as Playstation sailing along side...I doubt it would look like that 60' tri video.

I'm with you Timbo, the conditions in which the big cat are sailing is similiar to 1 mtr waves and 20 kts on a 18' boat. So you can imagine the size of the seas that are being encountered by this thing! Yeah the pucker factor for the average sailor would be way up by this time!

As usual you're correct Wouter. How could anyone expect an out of control boat like Playstation to even try an around the world record attempt much less breaking the record by days.

Was that the round the world record that the French TOTALLY trashed within the year ?

You know that other prediction of mine that you guys also thought extremely funny at the time.

I must say that Playstation scares me more with the conditions they are in.
The tri's look cool but nothing like a 125 foot cat.

Once you go cat you never go back! Nacra 5.2 (Elsies)#1499, running an inter17 spin!

Wouter..... You are quiet the Rock Star

How could we question you.

Perhaps you should give the guys who raced PS a few tips.

By the way, dont forget Fossett held the record before Orange smashed it. As designers and sailors are getting to know these boats over time, they are begining to understand the loads and just how hard you can push them. Boats like these were engineering firsts and as good as crunching data goes, you can't go past real life sea trials.

I am sure improvements will be made to the record as more attempts are made using the newly aquired knowlede from previous RTW attempts.

Orange 2 was a NEW design whose key feature was increased freeboard and raised crossbeams that kept it from smacking waves. It is the "third" generation of G-cats. It is no wonder that it beat the record - on top of that, Bruno is undoubtedly a better sailor than Fossett. Still, I'm willing to bet that if you were given a photocopy of Cheyenne, Fossett would expose you for the bitch that you are.
