Does anyone know of any good places to sail a Hobie 16 in Eastern North Carolina with easy water access? I usually have to sail at Jordan Lake because it has a nice site just for sail boats and allows you to back your boat right up to the water. Unfortunately windy days are hard to come by there. I'd love to find a public place near Oriental, NC where I could put in and launch from. I do have Cat Trax.

in oriental right at the foot of the bridge is decent access. i bought my h17 there last summer and test sailed it from there. my buddy and i went strait out into the sound until the mainsail started vaporizing from being rolled up and left outside on top of the tramp for a year or two. anyway, i hauled it back to charleston. this is the place to sail. i love my harbor. launch from station 12 on sullivan's island next to fort moultrie at the inlet. no trax needed. the road goes down to the sand, unhook and push it to the water on the trailer. notice the one power line, don't drive on the beach, leave your trailer on the beach

The first annual PIRATES Festival is going to be held this Spetember 27-29th from Cedar Island to Ocracoke Island. There should be about 12-15 boats in the regatta. Granted, it's not a catamaran regatta - all trailerable sailboats are welcome. But I'll be doing it on my Prindle 18.2 (right now the only cat). It's a 22 mile journey that goes beyond the sight of land which is new and different for many cat sailors. We'll be having fun contests, pirate dress-ups, a GPS treasure hunt and beach parties. Should be a lot of fun.

That sounds like something that I would be interested in. Also, the NC State Sailing club might enter a few boats if possible. We have several boats capable of making that journey, and this sounds like something that could be a lot of fun.

This weekend (17-18) is the Ya Gotta Regatta at Huntington Beach State Park south of Myrtle Beach, SC.

This is an ocean regatta. There is no pre-registration, just show up on saturday with $30 for singlehandeds or $35 for doublehandeds.

Includes racing, tee shirt and dinner.

It is a very nice campground with plenty of camping.



Next weekend (24-25) is the Camp Hatteras Regatta at the Camp Hatteras Cmpground in Rodanthe, NC on Hatteras Island.

This is a very nice commercial campground with access to the ocean and the sound, clubhouse, pool, hot tub, tennis courts, etc.

I'm interested in doing this race but I have a few questions. I'm up in Duck, NC. My thoughts are to get the boat to Cedar Island on Thursday night- then take the car and trailer back to O. Island- then return that night (Thursday)- spending the night at that Hotel you mentioned. Is this Hotel walking distances to the starting line? Is it safe to leave the boat at the starting line over night? Any comments or suggestions are welcome.

How far east are you willing to go. I just returned from a week in the Outer Banks. The wind is unbelievable. We had a blast. There is easy access to the bay from a spot called Canadian Hole. It's 10 miles north of Frisco (pretty far down). Any local can point out the area once you get close.

Thanks for all the suggestions and the weblinks. I'm pretty much willing to try anywhere along the NC shore. If you see a green 4Runner pulling Hobie 16 with a driver that looks lost, that's probably me. Please stop me and point me in the right direction.
