I guess this has been asked before but I could not find a thread.

If cost is not the prime consideration then what is the best high performancc main sail for a H16? What about square tops and Mylar vs dacron? The sail would not have to be class legal. In my part of the world I sail mostly in winds of 8-15 knots. Thanks for any advice.

If you've got a Comptip, then I wouldn't recommend a square-top sail. The top section of the mast is too bendy.

When Hobie made Mylar sails for the 16 (1991 - 1996), racers figured out pretty quick that the Dacron sails were faster, especially in light to medium air. They last longer, too.

I'd say check out Whirlwind Sails. There is a link somewhere here on Catsailor to their site and they offer a variety of different options for the 16. I havent heard any feedback from anyone though about how they hold up, but its worth a try.

www.whirlwindsails.com. But mbounds knows his stuff. So do what you may, I've wanted to get a spinaker for the longest time. Probably more fun than just changing your main, which if it is very tired, you wouldn't believe the difference that just a new factory sail makes.

I'm boatless.
