I should nave added that when I say “it will take care of itself” I should explain that it is my belief that IF some one did try to take advantage of a “no tip mast weight” and built themselves a mast much under that 6Kg tip weight, they would obviously be flirting with disaster as far as breakages are concerned and if they spent the money to only see it go down the gurgler, they are not going to be to keen to outlay the same money again knowing that their mast will only fail again, and as well, to gain any major advantage from a “light weight” mast they would have to go WELL below that 6kgs to be effective and not by just a small amount. So I can’t see carbon creating a price war within the class, there are already F16’s sailing every race day with carbon masts and the sky hasn’t fallen in yet, and the nature of the appropriate cost and structural limitations of the material will keep the existing status quo regarding the percentage of aluminium to carbon masts for a long, long time to come.
