Robi, the way I read "A single suit of sails" is, you cannot change one main or spinnaker or jib, for another during an event. It says nothing about dropping the jib alltogether.
Perhaps the wording should be "A single CONFIGURATION will be used...". I'm not trying to bend any rules here, just looking for clarification.
It would limit the flexability of the boat if we are required to race -with crew- and a crew has to leave during a regatta. Since we just completed the "Just as fast Uni as Sloop" debate, I don't see where it should make any difference.
I would agree that one should not be able to switch crews, from a heavy crew on a windy day, to a lighter crew on a light day (but we have no class min. wt.), or switch sails (one main sail for another), during a regatta. But when you drop your crew you also drop the jib, and you take on the added burden of running the spinnaker sets and drops while trying to round the marks, I see little advantage there, especially when the boats are rated equal.
