I've also seen some discussion here about getting tubes if the tires are basically OK just not holding air.

If your tires are even in marginal shape, tubes will solve the problem. Make sure to get the ones with stainless valve stems, and dab a little Lanocote where the rim comes into contact with the stem. Once you get the tire off of the axle, set the rim on its side hold onto something and stomp on the bead with your foot to break it. Install tube, and off you go.
