I did. It works great, and yeah, it sure is easier on the crew. I know of at least one other person that has done it too. I think it's 1/8", doubled. I centered it on one of the shackles and used a fid to lead it back and forth thru itself at roughly 8" intervals, then brummel-spliced loops in both bitter ends and attached to the other shackle. It's worked out great so far.
