Hello All,
Today I managed to chip-out a portion of the starboard hull cap/rim where the "footstrap" is. Being curious, I checked the Hobie 16 assembly manual for the proper reference and found that this item was probably added by one-of-two previous owners.

Would anyone have a suggestion as to the best repair? I think the fiberglass would need to be re-structured to handle the expected stress.

Thanks in advance,
Eric

Repair the holes with glass and or bog and re-drill the holes somewhere else, say an inch aft of their existing position.

You may also consider moving the holes further away from the edge to prevent it happening again. They are too close in the photos.

The preparation of the repair should ensure a clean surface with as much bond area for the bog to stick to...without going overboard ofcourse.

The bog I have in mind is a thick peanut butter mix of epoxy, milled fibre/glue powder and finely chopped glass fibres (say ~5mm long fibres).

If you want it to look good, don't make too much of a mess and leave the bog a bit sunken, then fill later with some cheap fairing compound (ie. car/builders bog) because it is easier to sand than the glue bog.

Be careful if you move in to far from the side, you will hit foam and then you have another problem!

take rope out. masking tape some newspaper to top of hull inside lip.
Sand inside of lip very clean and then lay in glass and resin. The glass should be at least three inches either side of hole. Repeat.
When happy with probable strength. sand to tidy.
Mix fairing compound into epoxy and fill hole from outside. Fill again as it will sag. Sand to tidy and then take a small gel coat repair kit, mix a little and apply. Do this three times and then sand down carefully with 80/200/600/1200wet and dry.. redrill hole. Refit rope.

Contact local Hobie Dealer and buy one shroud anchor rod that is used on the side stays, this is a round stainless steel rod with one hole in it. Cut the anchor in the middle where thread hole is. Now put in drill press and drill a hole in the center of each of the two pieces so you can tap for a 5/16 fine thread bolt. Use this for the rear of each footstrap and you have a bulletproof footstrap anchor that will spread the load correctly across the inner hull seam. Make sure that you use a large washer on top of stap to prevent pull out. Rope is okay put a lot of pressure on your foot in a small area. Windsurfer type foot straps or 2 inch wide nylon strap works best. This is the standard on Fort Lauderdale Beach for Big surf reaching on the wire.

I like Brets idea the best, I'd recommend it, as I've had 2 H16's and thats the only method I can see that would do minimal damage to the hulls in the future.
