Dan learned his lesson and the "new" Hobie 18 came with a mainsail with a window in it. I still have my factory windowless main, but I am mindful when I sail to know what's downwind of me as much as possible. When the day comes that I replace it, it will be a sail that eliminates blind spots.

Again, I agree. We may not have been at fault in the actual collission. But we were at fault for even allowing it to happen. I'm a "defensive sailor". I have to be. Lake Norman, NC can get pretty crowded with powerboaters on the weekends and some of those yahoos are usually drinking.

So I would rather be alive and give up the right of way than dead with a tombstone inscription that reads, "it wasn't his fault."

Say thar special treat...how come we don't see you at regattas around here (or do we and I just don't know you?). We've got some good weather coming through for this weekend on Keowee in Seneca...just a short trip down the road for you! Bring it!

Any boat overtaking another has to keep clear. Sail or power.

Are you sure about that.

When RACING the rules do not state that.

You don't see me because for the past 5 years I've been a bit of a sailing hermit. I wish I could say it's been the 5-yr-old and the 2-yr-old kids that's kept me from most of my sailing, but it's more than likely been the crappy job I used to have at a Charlotte-based bank that did it. Long hours, long stress, low pay. (Just changed that in January.)

So the few times I have been out on the lake has all been pleasure sailing. It's been YEARS since I've raced or joined in any regattas. And I HATE THAT! I haven't even been able to do Cat-Fest at LNYC. I would love to at least do that this year. Or at the very minimum, crew for somebody. Only problem with that is that no one ever wants a 225-lbs fat-butt crewman!

I've been jonesin' for several years now and it's gotten really bad. It may take some baby steps for me to get back to it and start out on my own pond first. But I'll get back there one day sure enough (traveling to events). Thanks for the invite! You don't happen to have an all-inclusive Carolinas cat regatta calendar or list of events, do you?

Your not helping me with that fix I need so badly. Having such an easy to reference website with all the regattas right there at my fingertips. Feed the addict! Feed the addict!

No promises. Like I said, I have to start with baby steps and begin training the family that Daddy goes bye bye on the weekends. One more quick question: Are many of these events OK with open class racing? That Prindle 18-2 of mine isn't very common. No fleets or one-design racing for me. So it's open class or nothing.

I've often thought that if (probably when) I got addicted to racing, I would invest in a popular (SE America), one-design, single-hander boat like a Hobie Wave. I don't believe there are a lot of A-class boats around here, are there?

The A class is getting ready to build handily here. We've got two amongst us (both sail F18 regularly though) and at least three more sailors on the bubble for A's. There are a couple of "closet wave sailors" here too that just need a nudge.

Open Class? Are you kidding? EMSA was formed a couple of years ago so that we could have a local organization that promoted open racing. If it's got two (or three) hulls, bring it.

Not talking racing, general right of way rules.

I sail in the "mecca" of NZ sailing and it becomes a madhouse for two weeks in summer as every idiot arrives to see if he can be as crazy here as he is on the motorway in the city, This combined with every other ego has his new giant yacht, motor launch and I just don't bother as it is like being in a shooting gallery of AC spectator wash. Thankfully they all only have two weeks as they have to go back and pay the mortgage or just don't actually like the sea.

Imagine the TheMightyHobie18 story. Increase the size of the motorboat and add alcohol to the driver's blood. The skipper's leg is caught by the screw. He survives but looses a leg. Happened to Lars Grael, Tornado olympic silver medalist.

Well that just PMO..a good man lost to an idiot who will go strait back out there.
What is it about a giant plastic brick and rotating knives that these buggers don't understand?
I am out on my 24' cabin cat and have been fishing. I am pulling the anchor up by hand in a chop and a 40 foot cigarette hull goes by within ten metres at 30 knotts and the city W***** waves at me with a smile as he goes by...???!!!..like he is onto it and just great to have around. Like the type in a 60 foot Riv who go by a quite little cove with several at anchor having lunch paying no mind to the fact his wake at that speed is four feet high.
Do they do it on purpose?

Not quite. He lost his license (it is mandatory in Brazil for vessels bigger than a pram), was sentenced to about five years and a pension to his victim. I believe he appealed, though.

No in the Racing rules; That rule died about 7 years ago.

Sure, but I think we are understanding it is not racing.
