A few weeks ago (months?) someone posted a link to a really impressive website with wind forecast. The impressive part was that it was very accurate, several days out. I can't find the link. I tried searching the forum, but was unsuccessful. Any ideas?

Thanks, Jake.

Looks like the original NOAA link you have in your frames also has the legend & some explanations, which are helpful.

I'm looking for reliable *inland* wind information, for inland lakes. So far, I'm not pleased with anything I've found. Any ideas?

Have you tried www.iwindsurf.com? Great coverage, but only in certain spots. The best info requires a subscription, but you can sign up for a free trial.

Dunno if it covers the lakes in your area--I'm assuming you'd like to know about Kerr, Jordan, etc. I used to live in Hillsborough, up the road from Durham.

For inland lakes, there is often a consistent local pattern to the wind; e.g. for Lake X, the wind is nil until 2pm, when it whips up to 15mph if the weather is above Y degrees and the humidity is below Z percent and then dies off at sunset.

Becoming your own weatherman is, ultimately, the most useful approach. Then you can watch the weather on the news and predict the wind that will accompany those conditions at your local lakes. The only time the usual "local pattern" is broken is if a powerful weather system roles through (eg Isadore, or a few years ago in the Triangle, Fran).

Good Luck,

What a surprise - Hillsborough is a great little town, isn't it?

So far (we're going on 6 weeks now) I have sailed on Lake Jordan, Lake Crabtree, or Falls Lake. Kerr Lake is a bit far for us.

Lake Jordan actually has a phone number with wind conditions (919-387-5969), which is really cool. But I doubt that many other lakes have anything like that.
