I'm storing my Hobie Getaway in Minnesota on a trailer in the grass with the tramps off. Will the cold and snow damage the wheels just sitting on the ground in one place with the weight of the boat on the trailer?

thanks, Doug

If you're really worried about it, you could take the wheels off and keep them in the house, and put the trailor up on jackstands. This also makes it harder to steal.

You'll be fine. The biggest thing is snow sitting on the tramp.

machines left out in snow generally suffer less problems than those left out in rain

the biggest problem with freezing is water expansion in pipes and radiators. water just sitting in the hulls doesn't seem to cause any problems when it freezes

at least that's been our experience storing our boats over winter

i've even pulled up and restored a fiberglass dingy that spent 8 years at the bottom of a lake that froze over most winters. a few bubbles in the gelcoat that shouldn't be there but eveything else seems fine structually

SNOW? SNOW? what is this thing called snow? AHH I think I remember that we used to have that many years ago but all the sailers here got together and banned it 'cause it hindered our sailing for the full 12 months of the year.

Suggest you store with the trailer tilted up so water will run off, and with plugs open. Condensation will occur in the hulls, and should be allowed to drain out. This is how we store the cats at Sail Sand Point in Seattle. www.sailsandpoint.org

I have always stored my trailers with the trailor jacked up on blocks so the wheels are off the ground in NH. Not sure if it is required but my wheels have not have problems.

I usually try to put the trailer up on cinderblocks to get the wheels off the ground during long-term storage. Next year I need to replace the wheels anyway, so I didn't bother this winter.

One thing to note. If you store your boat under a tarp with the mast as an A-frame. You need to be careful about how much weight from snow/rain builds up on the tarp. One time I noticed a lot of water had pooled on a tarp, and it bent the mast quite heavily (the mast had rolled with it's side facing up rather than the stronger front facing up).

Thats a good point about using the mast that way. I need to cover a larger boat this winter (should probably be shrink wrapped) and was going to do that but I will figure out something else.

Are you seriously worried about snow in Pensacola?

HA!
I wish. I moved to Michigan in August. The blade is snug in my garage in Fl. The larger boat will be up here (who knows where they will all be as the years go on).
