Hi all,
On the w/e I put a small crack in one of my hulls just behind the main bulkhead.

I was just wondering how ppl would repair this.

I was going to put filler/hardener over it then place a bit of fibreglass tape over it.

Any ideas would help.

cheers
William

William,

I would glass both inside and outside or it will just crack again.....and depending on size I would initially open up the crack slightly and glue it before glassing it.

The outside may need to be sanded back so that when it is glassed it is fair with the hull

And do use Epoxy resin and glue (Bote Cote, Epiglass or similar) as the polyester will fail in time.

Will,

How did you crack it ? Not a stress fracture I trust. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

Your hulls are timber aren't they ?

If a stress crack drill out the end of the crack so that it won't continue. Open up the crack and fill with high strength epoxy and fibreglass tape over the top. Fair it off with filler when you have more time.

Regards,

Peter

Hi Peter,

Its not a stress crack. The crack went right through.
I did it trying to get onto the hull to right it.

Hi Will,
Jim Boyer's method to repairing holes in timber mozzies goes like this:
1. take an angle grinder to it and bevel the edge of the hole to about a centimeter or more all around.
2. wet the bevelled edge with resin.
3. lay fibreglass tape over the hole and on the bevelled edge, as much of the bevelled edge as possible.
4. brush resin over the tape.
5. fill the hole with a fibre glass filler - he recommends the west system of "microfibre blen gap filler (403)". This is mixed into the fibre glass resin till it is of a consistency desired, and then used to fill the hole.
6. leave a bit too much and sand it down later.
I have used this method and am really pleased with the results.
Jim says it is stronger than the original ply.
Hope it goes well.
Keith
