Tech question: Because the elastic of the clip which holds the crossbar in in it´s place broke, I bored out the two rivets becauce I thought that was thee way to take the helm-end off. Now I cannot get the end of, and can´t reach the elastic to replace it. Anybody know what I mean and have an answer? Thanks,
Nico

Hobie 20 elastic bungee replacement for the metal clip on tiller arm: The first time 1. drill out the rivets 2. pull the cap off 3. poke the taped bungee end through from the outside 4. Keep pushing until it comes out, untape, tie in a figure 8 knot then pull the knot back inside.

Second time: now the cap would not come off. 1. drill another hole under the first hole through the tiller extension 2. use a piece of line through both holes 3. tie the bungee in place for the clip.

If you don't want the second hole, just get a long piece of bungee and push it down the tiller arm till it sticks out, tie the knot and then pull it back and cut it off at the right length.

The first time my bungee broke I just made a external system by attaching small u clips on the arms and tying off the bungee with the clips yo it. This way , you can always see when the bungee is getting damaged and it is a breeze to change. Marvin.

I installed this system on a Hobie 18 and I just drilled down completley through the tube and tied a figure 8 at the bottom. Never had any problems and its easy to replace. Make sure to deburr the holes so there's no chafe.

O.K. I see what your gettin´at, but does this mean I´m gonna have to let the cap that won´t come of be in it´s place?
What ´ll happen if it falls of spontaniously during a rough ride? And why won´t it come off anyway?
I´m used to get my way so the cap is gonna come of anyway, hope somebody answers before heavy machinery is to be used.

T. Taylor

When I installed the system I had to grind the cap down so it would fit. Its been part of the boat for 5 years and my feeling is if I had to remove it it would take some HD MACH.

good luck !!

One word:
CORROSION!!
There is aluminum to aluminum contact in there.
In order to salvage the H20 style fittings from a broken Hobie 16 tiller, I had to cut it off and drive it out.

Thanks for all your answers! I´ll go for the idea of Sam with the long bungee and put two rivets back in place where I bored ´m out.
I´m gonna leave the cap where it is, ´caus I think I´m gonna damage stuff I don´t.
