Sure, I'm the last guy to need a fourth cat, but....I'm looking at an '85 Stiletto, no sails and a Supercat 20 tall rig mast(38.5', triple spreader) instead of the std 36' Stiletto extrusion. In shopping for new sails, I called Tom Haberman @ Aquarius Sails(mfgr of Supercats and ARC cats), and he expressed reservations about using this rig, designed for a 450 lb boat, on an 850 lb boat. And I do want to run a spin and/or hooter, and again, this mast was not designed for that. I do sail in a lot of light air, could this rig be used judiciously, reefing early(smaller high wind main?), not running spin/screacher over x knots? Keep the spin hlyd tang close to the hounds? Am I capable of the necessary restraint?
Opinions cheerfully entertained!

Dave

Dave,

You probably should also post on the Stiletto website. Lots of engineers, Stiletto people/designers there that are familiar with the Stiletto characteristics etc. Maybe Peter Wormwood would chime in.

Good luck,

Clayton

I have an 85 stiletto 23. I'd be shocked if it actually weighed 850 pds. I think that is really optimistic. Myboat is kevlar/nomex and though I have never weighed the boat,I have moved the hulls around quite a bit. I have also talked to Peter about it quite a bit, I think the 23 is realistically closer to 1000 pds. My instinct says "bad idea", but i'm not an engineer. The loads on my boat are pretty extreme when shes powered up. certainly a lot more than on a sc 20. Dont forget, the 23 is almost 4' wider than the SC 20. So you'd be hanging 200 plus more pounds on a 4 foot longer lever when you are flying a hull, i'd be very worried.

Oh yeah, I have a 23 rig i'm not using. I replaced it with carbon. I cannibalized the spreaders and the mast step. I'd sell it to you, but I am all the way in RI.

Did Forte build the mast for you? They mentioned making one recently and using the existing spreaders. Did you switch for weight reasons? Could you PM me with your phone#? Thanks!

Dave,

Where is the boat located? Is it named 'double up'?

Outside of Houston somewhere. Tommy Granger's old boat. I thinks that's the name. What do you know?
