i want to glue my hull posts into the corner castings, without making it impossible to remove them later. plan 1: coat the posts with release agent (vaseline) before gluing. then glue with thickened epoxy. plan 2: glue with polysulfide or similar flexible bedding compound. heat the corner casting with a torch and use a rubber mallet to knock them apart if i need to later. whaddya think? any other suggestions? i want to do something soon, i'm suffering from hobiecat withdrawal!

I say glue it and forget it. If you heat the post with a torch, you risk hull damage. If you use vasoline, it will not bond.

The only thing I can recommend is a "glue". I have been using expoxies for a long time at work. The two best for all-weather application I have found are: PC-7 and PC-11.

PC-7 is a grey epoxy and is unbelieveably stong. When I have re-built H14's and H16's for people, I use this on the casting joints to stop frame creaking. I have also used it in emergency situation to patch hulls.

PC-11 is a white epoxy specifically designed for marine use. I use it to re-coat hull bottoms. It sands and molds great.

Both can be applied underwater.

The most important thing to consider is: your vent holes are tubes in the front pylons. You do not want to seal these pylons where your hulls cannot vent.

I used an epoxy that is used to glue fiberglass handles in tools...axes, hammers, and such. If I was doing it again:

1st I would bevel the casting so I could pour the glue in without making a big mess. Then I would place a layer of silicon in the bottom of the casting to keep the epoxy from running on the inside of the pylon. Then I would assemble my boat...leaving the plugs loose, so it can vent during the process. With the boat upside down, I would square it and let it sit overnight, so the silicon can harden. The next day, I would mix and pour in the epoxy resin. Let it dry, then I drilled a small hole from the rear of my front pylons through both the casting and pylon to enter the vent cavity. Be sure to test for proper ventalation before putting in your plugs and putting your boat in the water.

For what it is worth,
David

I have done this with waterproof grease (the blue stuff). I greased the pylon before gluing to give me a good chance of getting it apart if I ever needed too. Tie the bows together with a piece of line. 16's go better with toe in. Make sure the tramp is square before gluing. I usually flip the boat and put it on 4 jack stands. I use west system epoxy with just a little thickener. Should be syrup consistancy. Put it in a squeeze bottle and apply it around the pylon. As it seeps in add more till it sets. Good Luck!
